A 850 H.P. John Deere diesel vs. a steam tractor rated 18 H.P ?
... enjoy

Angle of the "tow rope" didn't help either. Since it was angled it was taking weight off the diesel and adding more to the steam. Fun video either way.

They don't call that steam tractor a traction engine for nothing.

Great trench digger.

Kurtis, you're right … but wouldn't it be the same way in the field? I suppose with some implements you want the weight on the ground and a parallel pull, but it seems to be an efficient machine for getting big work done. I wonder how many gallons of water it holds to create the steam, and how much you can get done before needing a refill.

Steam engines have the same full torque potential at any rpm, never changes. So, 18hp yeah, but 25 bazillion ft-lbs at 1 rpm... :)

LOL, you could hunt for excuses all day long (tow rope angle, etc.) as to why the steam tractor wins this "pull-off"...truth is, that steam tractor barely recognizes the load behind it...you could hook a second john deer to it and lay a city bus on its side, that steam tractor will drag every bit of that up a hill...the steam tractor was toying with that john deer!
