cvx18
« on: August 27, 2015, 02:23:49 PM »
Found a cvx18 orange im looking at got some questions it start at 3:02 Ford motor + 888 outdrive the boat is all original it's got soft spots underneath the front seats from wet bathing suits and then the typical a couple of cross the back by the backseat it's a decent price galvanized trailer I'm just looking at how much it would cost to lay a floor in it do you think the stringers also might be damaged excetera boat runs excellent he said he put new bellows gimbal excetera in he said it run about 50 it's got a 19 hi 5 on it maybe a reason why I'd throw a 24 pitch Tempest on it any thoughts Thanks

Terry even if the floor is solid, the stringer could still be mulch underneath. I had that in my '79.  If it has multiple soft spots I doubt the stringers are good but you never know until you open it up.

That little 302 will never turn a 24P prop. I also ran a 19P High Five on mine. They are a slow prop on the top end but not much beats them for hole shot, so they are great for water sports. A 21P was all the 305 in my CVX18 could turn. It didn't have the torque to turn my 22P Enertia. Total slug out of the hole, 4K RPM @ WOT lightly loaded.

My 18 had a 302 and the biggest prop I turned was a 4 blade 23 and a 25 lazer 2. The best/ fastest I used was the 4 blade 21 pitch Merc Rev 4. Best top speed was 60.1 with the Rev 4 if i remember correctly. The motor had some work done to it so it was not stock. Was orange as well. Sold it to a guy in OK
I think this has become an addiction.

I would guess the best prop for that craft would be around a 21p, my 898 ran fairly well with it.  Now onto wood rot.  If its soft, my assumption is the stringers will need attention as well.  The job is labor intensive as many can testify to, but as others have done, it is a better feeling knowing what's under your feet.  I guess if I were going to farm it out, I would want to check progress to insure its done well.  Mine had a newer floor, but rotten stringers.  Could not tell, floor felt solid.  My best advice, buy it at a reasonable price, enjoy it for a season, then decide if the cvx18 is worth the effort.

Ok, IMO...only you can decide that.  A wise man once told me to base it on the shape of the gel coat.  If the hull is in excellent condition, then I'd say it'd be time to think it over.

There's a nice blue cvx-18 on the GOTD thread, and my old CVZ-19 is a really nice one too Terry.  It'd be nice to see you and Sandee at the meets again!

Having to hire somebody to do the repair work is very expensive.  I had somebody replace one motor mount stringer in my jet daycruiser, not a Glastron.  I knew nothing about boat building or fiberglass.  I worked alongside the guy I hired and that one small job cost $1,000 plus $350 for materials.  Might I suggest you call some fiberglass guys & get some quotes before you pull the trigger....-Rich

The 888 outdrive is as good as any other made by MerCruiser at the time. "888" just refers to what motor it was mated to.

Good advice above that you don't have to necessarily tear into it right away. I knew the floor under the rear seat in mine was rotted bad, and the transom had some rot too. I ran it that way for 3 years and could have ran it another at least another 3. I was just careful not to run it hard in rough water because I knew the wood structure was suspect.

If you do decide to buy it, check the strakes along the hull bottom and make sure there isn't any stress cracking going on. If you find that I'd pass.

I will second the stress fractures comment.  When the stringers get weak from rot, the end result will be more flexible on the glass.  $3600.00 would seem fair for a solid craft with little stress fractures and decent gel.  The 888 is the same leg as the 898, ford vrs gm.  Never done it personally, but the legs should be interchangeable.  I'm running an alpha on my 898 transom.  No issues except for hitting stuff.  I got rather excited to find a cvz in Omaha, gave $3500 for it, and it ended up needing everything. I think we are coming into the perfect season to find a deal on a boat.  Seems like CGOTD has been busy.

Must be this one ?
Would guess having a shop like Shipwreck do "soft spots" would turn into floor, stringer, transom and easily double the price of boat ... Maybe much more ... and it's not a 350 motor ...
Some nice CVX18's on CL if your willing to travel and double your budget ...

1977 Glastron Carlson CVX-18 PRICE REDUCED! - $4000 (Milton)

1977 Glastron Carlson CVX-18 with trailer. 302 ci engine with Mercruiser outdrive and stainless steel High Five propeller. Boat is in very good condition and mostly original. I have owned this boat since 1995 and I am only the third owner. New this year: rebuilt starter, all lower unit-to-transom bellows, and gimbal bearing, lower unit oil change. New water pump last year along with engine oil change. Boat has a few minor scratches but is overall very good. Interior is excellent however there are a few soft spots in the floor. Bilge pump, lights, horn, and all gauges work. I have had this boat in the water this year and it is running great! $4,000 Contact Dennis at

I agree about what was said about the gel & flake ...
Except for Shawn's CVX, most 30 year old G/C's are going to have some "Soft spots" ...
Even buying one that has been "Totally restored" ... You don't know what they did or used to "Totally restore" it.

Terry how close is this one to you? Might be worth a look.

Has a few mods.

They did a nice job putting vents in the engine cover so the motor can breathe better. Looks good!

Yep I'd take a look at it, looks like a pretty good deal depending on what's wrong w/the engine. Is that an Alpha SS on it? Hard to tell but that would be a huge score if it is.

I noticed the nose cone also, but it did not appear to be shorter than a regular alpha.  If it is an alpha SS then the value of the boat is higher.  Not too crazy about the exhaust, but now wondering what may be lurking within.

There's a '79 -18 in my town for sale. Wants over $4k for it. Looks darn near original. Wish I could lay $2000 down and see if he bites.
