I was at a garage sale today and noticed a small glastron cabin cruiser with a best offer sign on it.
went back tonight to talk to the owner, turns out it belongs to a guy i worked with a few years ago (small world)
he had it covered and did not really want to uncover it but described it as a project. upholstery is rough, and it has hail damage, and the windshield is broken. it has a camper cover and travel cover that are well worn. mercruiser with a ford 351 apparently runs good.
he eluded to $3500 or offer.
i know in the long run this would be the boat Laurie would want but the time is just not right for me.
here is his contact info.

Small world is right! I worked with him too. I think he came on with us as a "contract" engineer.
-
Is it blue on white?
If so, it's been on CL for a couple years. Pam and I considered it to stay true to Glastron before we bought our current Searay
-
I don't even remember, but it was in Maple wood near hwy 36 and white bear ave.
he said he really wants to sell it, but then he still has it (he told me it was for sale 7 years ago too)
so i guess he dont want to sell it all that bad :/
right now their is 1 page and a half of glastrons on CL here. but i must say some of these people are high (and so is their price)

Giving the old Safari Explorer quite the workout!

How come it doesn't have the Glastron swoosh on the side?
Does it need any major work?
-
Probably Transom, engine mounts, rear floor (forward from engine compartment has been done previously). No cushions in cuddy, has camper top, but it's in poor condition.

It was repainted at some point. Plan is to eventually have Glastron swoop again

Congrats! How much work is this one going to be?
What about the160? Back burner now?
-
Yeah, 160 on back burner (still). How fast can u guys assist on transom, etc. lol. We were Hoping it was usable as is? But joe says it isn't. We did get a good discount on the price because of it

Congrats guys, hopefully you can complete the basic repairs and have it out this summer. Looks like it would make a great river boat. Fur lined in the cuddy, all I can say is Bow chicka bow wow. Hope to see it in august, since I kinda doubt you would drag it all the way to Rathbun.

That is the hatch that came with the boat as I bought it, I don't know if it's a replacement although it looks original. I'll get some photos and dimensions while I'm in the cuddy.

Looks like one way to do it. I'm assuming the photographer was also the eyes in the boat as it was pulled out. Your skid steer looks identical to my old hydramac 8A, same controls and chain tensioners. Was a good machine, onan engine, had to upgrade to obtain aux hydraulic.

Yes...the photographer was me… Trying to use hand signals to direct him where to go (ok, not THAT hand signal, lol). And hollering "I don't think this is going to fit thru that opening!" <crunch> it's out! Lol.

By the sounds of it, this is going to be a comparatively light restore right? Transom and engine mounts? Engine runs?
-

Well...
Hoping for the best
I know the transom and motor mounts need to be replaced, the stringers in the engine compartment seem to be solid.
The floor is a new half-inch floor over an old three-quarter inch floor, both rotten, so we will see how that all pans out.
Motor runs, drive and components all seem solid. Although I'm sure we're going to end up replacing the gimbal bearing bellows and prob the coupler.
If I can at all avoid taking this motor back out it would be good.

Not certain what others would do in that scenario, but personally, if it's that rotten half way up, I would replace it all. As you said earlier, you only want to pull the motor once. Did you mention the stringers were solid?

LOL ...
So transom was so wet / rotted, you could rip it out by hand ?

I have compared Marine ply to exterior grade and found there is a definite difference, not only in the number of plies laminated but in the harness of the wood, marine is harder and stronger. I use nothing but marine ply when I do this kind of work.

Yep, it's straight and smooth, and you can screw into the edge of it without it splitting.
I guess I was sold on it when we put a new floor are in our 15-year-old pontoon, basically the carpet in that thing is always wet and the plywood that we took off the floor with the exception of one small piece in the corner was still sold.

Ah yes the infamous Glastron: mud plate.
I don't remember dealing with this on the 1900, ground the one out on the GT afterwards decided I should have left it
Anyways, several pieces of this one came with the Rottenwood I wondered if I could just Patch it then I noticed that the water had seeped into all the little cracks, I chiseled about 75% of it off.

Nice. Like the idea.
I noticed you have only 1 drain for the bilge. I have a separate drain for the fuel tank compartment. In the center of the 1st pic you can see the drain well in the floor of the fuel tank compartment with the hose barb exiting the bulkhead. 2nd pic fuel compartment drain to the right of the bilge drain. The wood around this hole was solid, probably saved by the generous amount of grease and oil I removed.
-
Yes Fuel tank compartment had that fitting, but there was no drain for it on the transom, and I can tell after taking the transom out that it had never been installed.
I did not install the low spot in the fuel tank floor but I will put that fitting back in so it can drain to the bilge if there's any leakage
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Interesting that on our boat there is a Sign mounted in the Cutty step that explains about that drain and checking it for leakage periodically

Just a thought, draining the fuel compartment directly into the bilge may allow flammable vapors into the bilge. That's why the separate drain. You might get away with using a petcock and draining after evacuating the bilge with the blower.
On that line of thought did you provide for venting the battery compartments? Don't need Hydrogen building up under the deck.
-
Joe, you have the much needed staying power. Working these larger projects is like losing a lot of weight. A pound here, a pound there, it's hard to see the needle move. Just lean forward and progress. It's really looking good. It's ironic that the truly important parts of a resto are the hidden infrastructure that no one will ever see.
R
-
Thanks for the encouragement.
John, The way I figure it, all the new ones have the fuel tank open to the bilge, so just letting it drain the way it was before should be fine.
Battery boxes have a drain, and two pipes to feed wires through I think that should be enough ventilation.
Shawn stopped over last night, help me put in the frame for the fuel compartment. Jim came over this morning for all cut out and fit.

I see the pipes you're talking about, they hadn't been installed yet in the previous pics. That should offer more than enough ventilation. The floor looks good. Keep up the fine job. Now to go out and work on mine.

Very nice work Joe. Especially with the heat wave we've been having. Zaps my energy.
Me too
Most of the work we had gotten done we did in the mornings, one nice thing about the heat. It helps the foam expand it to it's max potential.
Last night I finished pouring the foam in the cuddy step area, CSM on the floor of the fuel tank compartment and filled all the imperfections and gaps In the floor with Cab.
Also adjusted the size of the storage compartment openings because they interfered with the seat on the port side and the foot rest storage locker on the starboard side.

Gel
The floor is going to get another coat with awlgrip
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

That looks gorgeous! Since you stated you were going to awl grip over it, does that mean the white gel coat has the wax in it to allow it to cure for a different chemical composition topcoat. Will you be adding the friction modifier(SAND) to the awlgrip?
-
The awlgrip is the texture additive, I guess they make a paint to add the texture to also. The folks at express composites assured me that this texture works great in gelcoat
And this gelcoat does have wax in it, so I'm going to have to wash that off and sand the high spots before I put the second coat on

Looks like a fantastic job, Laurie's boat may end up being the nicest in the fleet?

Very nice! 8)

The owner of this fine craft informed me that white is a cool color, and seeing as the boat is a warm color the floor needed to be the same. "that is just too white "
So we made it tan.

Did you get the dizzy clips?
Good progress this week. Keep up the good work .
-
It took just over 1 gallon to do the white on everything, including the fuel compartment bilge transom and storage boxes.
The tan just on the top of the floor took 2 1/2 pints, but that doesn't include the compartment covers.
So I would guess if you're doing just the top of the floor you could get two coats out of a gallon

Thanks Joe.
I'm doing the top of the floor and with any left over I'll do the bilge.

Nice use of foam to secure the tank. Curious, what is the capacity of that tank?
-
I think there brochure said it was 47 gallons.
Yeah I didn't like the way they had the straps in there before so I figured it could rest on that black foam and the bags in the corner would hold it in place. there will be three braces across the top that will hold it down and hold the floor up

I also was not impressed with how the tank was secured from the factory. Do like your solution and may try something similar.
-
If near empty and the craft filled with water(God forbid), then then tank could provide approximately 400 pounds of flotation. Might be something to consider when you design your top supports over the stock straps. Just a thought.

Not Unless you had a 100% sealed system. There is a vent hose that would eventually let in water.
-
On My Bal Harbor the fuel tank was held in by 3 hanger straps that were fiberglassed to the floor. I'm sure that's the way Joe found his. I believe any other mounting method would be just as secure, if not more.

The project looks great, do you think it will make it to water yet this year?
i hope to...
but time is running out, just about ready to install the motor.
i need to adjust the bunks on the trailer, figured it would be easier without the motor, broke some u bolts and had to order them.
many fall projects that require my time, as well as broken cars (jumped timing chain and bent valves on my son's Saturn)
and its gonna be 70 degrees today so a run to the nauty hog is required :D
i should be able to finish the trailer Wednesday, then i can get to dropping the motor in.

I was able to get the bunks fixed last week, and finish putting the cuddy together yesterday, I also got the first frame done for the in floor storage, took about three hours to build the first one, had to get my system down.

Took me quite a while, I couldn't seem to get the alignment just perfect. Then I turned the motor over, it seems that the coupler has a memory from having sat misaligned for so long :/
I assume that is gonna to be hard on the gimble bearing but I'm not pulling the motor back out till I water test it.
Also got the drive on, trim tested, filled and blead
(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161022/3844f93d47df1156955793c666eabfc8.jpg)
Should be able to get it started after getting some fluids in it.

I wonder if the coupler rubber developed a "memory" will it cause a coupler to fail now that it is aligned correctly. Hopefully it will just work enough to warm up and align back to where it should be. My alignment tool fits pretty snug, but on older couplers I used grease to imprint a pattern to tell where stuff is at. Used a steel pipe the first time, not even clise to right. Beautiful weather right now, hope to see some pictures soon on the water with fall colors.
-
I'm certain I will have a chance to water test it before I have to put it away, as far as the colors go we were driving through Stillwater last night and it looks like most of the leaves are off on the Minnesota side, Wisconsin side was looking pretty good yet
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
I'm assuming you 'set' the coupler & gimbal using the Merc prodecure to 'whack' the alignment bar in all 4 directions? Mine was had to align, I could get it close, but once I 'set' it using their procedure, the alignment bar slid in with a finger pushing on it.

Not sure yet, Laurie was looking at some marine material, not vinyl.
Any ideas?
Also trying to come up with the most convenient way to use the storage
I'm quite certain that the original design was wrong, my new plan is to have a triangle piece in the front, and two longer side pieces as you saw the foam I cut. but those big pieces are kind a hard to handle. Also debating whether cushions should be stapled to the boards or should be separate, certainly more sewing if the cushions are separate from the boards. I do know for certain that the cushion over the potty should be separate from the board, I think it's going to be a lot more convenient climbing in and out of the hatch if you can just throw the cushion off to the side and stand right on the wood.

All things considered the first voyage on the river went real well. A small amount of excitement at the launch, I had the idol set to low and I could keep it running to get going after a quick adjustment we were off. Mechanically everything seems to work good engine has good oil pressure, pumps water, starts and idles well, gets up on plane really easy, tops out at about 40 mph with a 19 inch ballistic stainless prop that is in poor condition.
When we tested it on white bear lake last Sunday there was no water in the building when we were done, after a half hour test.
But yesterday, having been in the water for about 30 hours, a lot of water came out of the bilge when I pulled the plug, I never noticed the pump run, so I guess that's something I have to look into next year when I get it back on the water

Is there a filler board/cushion for center ?
I had a FourWinns that had a table that would serve as base for center cushion.
When not in use's as table or fuller cushion base, it would "Clip" to wall of head out of the way.
You can see "Clips" in lower right of picture #2.

Gregg is that the boat you used to refer to as the "Foul Winns"? ;)
I'd make the cushions out of vinyl. The less carpet and fabric you have in the cuddy of a boat the better IMHO. Easier to clean and vinyl doesn'y hold moisture & then mold/mildew. I've seen the v-berth cushions done both ways depending on the boat. Some are attached to a solid/rigid board and some sit on top of a solid, usually carpeted surface so they need no support.
-
Referred to as "The Majestic Foul Winns" !
I'd second the chooses of vinyl. It's going to get wet down there with people using the portipotty and cloth will stain over time.
Wet people, kids and dogs !

Joe since the bilge has fresh paint can you see any trails or staining where water would have been coming in? A slow drip or stream would probably leave some sort of stain.
-
It's actually gelcoat with wax, so the water basically just beads up wherever it's in there.
I figured that was enough water I should be able to see a trickle where it's coming in when I'm in the water, I would assume somewhere around or on the gimble assy

well finally back at it...
mostly figuring out what to buy and getting stuff ordered
figured locations for stereo, amp and speakers
installing a JBL 500W RMS 4 ch amp on the back of the cuddy bulkhead port side.
ordered 4 polk audio 6.5 " 2way speakers.
also ordered a fireboy CO detector
fixed the jabsco motorized spotlight, it would not always go up, i added a shim to clutch pack and ordered a new rubber boot.
and i fabbed up a 2 circuit shore power panel with an ELCB main breaker and an outlet.
main reason i wanted a shore power hookup is to run the dual battery charger, yes a 30A hook up is over kill, but well...

a note on the power panel, the third hole is for a red light to monitor for reverse polarity, and the green light was to monitor ground.
after further review the ground monitor is not a real thing for this application as it would cause current to flow continuously through the ground (this is a bad thing) so that will be eliminated. and for the reverse polarity indicator i had to make up my own light with an LED, diode and a 25k resistor as per ABYC requirements this circuit must have a min Resistance of 25k.
I think this is an area where the rules should be followed as electricity and water can be a bad combo.
though im not worried about my home made panel as most you buy are just a plastic panel with no enclose, the order in which i must install it requires an enclosure.
-
If your going with a dual battery set-up here's what I run in my SeaRay and would recommend. I prefer 2 of these dual purpose batteries over a house & starting battery.

I'll need to redo the "shore power" on my V225 as one of the PO's wired in several outlets and a battery charger in a way that scares the daylights out of me.
They did start with a 30A inlet receptacle and a master breaker with reverse polarity protection but went downhill after that.
the incoming wiring and master breaker was mounted on the helm seat (wood) without an enclosure.
Nice master Breaker

Thanks Kip, i already got battery's last year, Fleet Farm brand.
not as good as diehard but sometimes i can only spend so much money :/
Thanks John, i am going to mount it in the compartment under the port side seat in the cuddy.
i have many of those 25A ELCB breakers, and many 10A breakers, the panel has 2 16A breakers cuz i was planning in an outlet in the back to plug the charger in but i decided i don't want an outlet back by the engine compartment, and i am putting the charger in the port side battery compartment so i am going to direct wire it to a 10A breaker.
if you want i can send you an ELCB, a 16 and a 10, just let me kno.
-
I finished cutting the boards for the engine compartment, the trim pump is on the starboard side so I put a door there will be a small amount of storage for some extra equipment or tools or something by the pump.
On the port side I left it open all the way back to the transom I figure that will give me a little extra space to shove the cooler back there

I will finish the boards in that tan colored gel coat that I mixed up for the floor.

Why don't you try and fine some red vinyl and wrap them it that?
-
I agree, some red vinyl would look much better. I have some I can spare but I am not sure about the color match, it might be the same but being color-blind I am not one to consult on colors according to Toni.
-
I am guessing he was referring to the floor covers.....
-
No I was talking about the panels as well, there's a pad that goes across the back right above the engine cover, and there are also pads that go across from the engine cover to the sides to form a sun pad or a seat in the back. Originally there was one piece of wood back there with woodgrain finish similar to the Burlewood, it only had two small doors in it I didn't like the access that's why I changed it. So basically when this new design is in use you won't see much of that anyways that's why I'm planning to gel coat the same color as the floor.
Now that's my plan, having brought up your comments I think I will pass these new ideas on to the owner of this Fine craft and move forward from there.

nice! How are you creating the labels for your toggles?
-
It's a thermal transfer printer that we use at work to print on shrink tube and Mylar label stock, The brand is K-sun. The label isn't that much different than what you get off of a brother printer, but the software gives you a lot more flexibility as for character size and layout.

Very nice work Joe. Curious though, will the stereo only be used when your in the cabin, or does it have a remote for use at the helm? I like the looks of the custom enclosure wrapped with vinyl, fits there nicely.

It does have a remote but it's also very easy to reach from the port side seat with that little door to the cuddy flipped open and I figure when we're underway it'll be open most of the time

Yes, there is a seat on each side of the engine cover. Still working on those. He hasn't splashed it or fired it up yet hoping to do that soon. He had to do a lot of work on the trailer. And he got new tires for it.

At WOT it's on plane in about 15 seconds, Max speed is 37 mph.
It cruises real nice at 30 mph, about 3000 RPMs, and it cuts right through all the rough water on the St. Croix on the weekend

It doesn't really stow, that's just the mechanism so it can move forward and backward, it does move back far enough so you can stand at the helm.

So after camping two weeks ago, we got back to the launch after, I back the trailer in the boat wouldn't start, starter has a stuck bendix :-( oh well, so we walked the boat on the trailer.
As it turns out I installed the starboard side motor mount too far back, so it was in the way of the starter, had to take the saws all to it to get the starter out, also had to remove the alternator and the water hose.
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170621/3ab95ab8e0f933d5b065d9a6239bc71d.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170621/7bf0beabd7c922cc2456066cc3bf8d6e.jpg)
This is the large heavy duty Prestolite starter.
Jim was helping me out, we tried a smaller starter design but that didn't pan out, so had the original one rebuilt, install the new starter, and then it turned over but I couldn't get it to start, turns out for some odd reason the fuel pump failed as well. And the rebuilt starter only worked once, Bendix still sticks so that is back at the rebuilders now.
I did get the electric feel pump installed last night

Still waiting for the oil pressure cut out switch and block off plate for the mechanical pump.

Could the Bendix issue be related to shimming? My camper,(454), gave me grief untill I shimmed it correctly.
-
No shimming in these, starter bolts to the bell housing, i'm not that familiar with how the Bendix actuates in the Prestolite starter, but seeing as we had it rebuilt the guy who did the work I'm sure will fix it, though it's kind of a bummer when they missed something the first time around

John prob knows best, he is a fan of the engines with the distributor on the wrong side of the engine. My experience with Ford starters is the electric motor turns to throw the Bendix, the Chevies used the solenoid to throw before applying current to starter motor. In either case if the gear mesh is not correct then premature failure is likely. My camper starter worked for about 4-5 starts before the Bendix locked extended. New starter and removing the shims worked best. Likely just a bad Bendix in your case.

Is that gauge for fuel pressure??

Why are the seats corners pointy like this? Does it serve a purpose? Benny is wondering. Lol ;-)

Just a guess, but I suspect the side foam were bolsters that helped keep folks centered in the seats. Over time the side foam collapses and leaves the "points"? Looks to be puppy approved to me! I think that boat is their favorite.

We're working up to reupholstering the back-to-back seats. "Spock seats" lol

I think your foam is old and starting to "Break down" loosing it's shape and making seat look weird ...
My foam was smash down, and soft, so replaced with new and got shape back.
Paul had left over pieces from other jobs, so we built up layers and wedges.

It's only 40 years old. ;-p

My wood seat base's were rotted, so made new one's and added a two inch layer of high density foam on top of old foam.
Seemed to help, but when kneeling on seat I could hit bottom board.
You could just add to old foam to get shape back ...
Paul uses a electric carving knife to cut foam, works great !

Checked out the camper top. There's some custom critter-made venting that needs to be repaired :-/

Yes, we patched up the camper cover, and it’s a good thing because it’s raining like heck right now

The cockpit cover was beyond repair so we used it for patching

Not overly beautiful, but they are functional :-)

Not sure how to do the repair any better. Maybe a matching panel inside? Or maybe cut the old part out now near the seam? Looks perfectly functional to me.

We used spray adhesive, helps to keep the patches in place for sewing and also keeps the tattered parts from flopping around. That kinda eliminated the ability to trim close to seams (but that probably would have looked better). Striving for functional, not beautiful. Lol

Spray adhesive, I'll have to remember that, great idea.
