After getting the drive mounted on Barb's Intimidator today, I noticed it looked higher than usual, I got a measuring tape to it, then measured the drive height on my Scimitar to find out it is the same height .. this Intimidator has not been modified, so I quess that explains why the Intimidator has such a raised motor cowl, and the exhaust pipes as well. I had been wondering about Barb running this prop, because of the depth in the water .. well I quess I don't have to wonder any more, it will be the same depth as my boat ... thats Kool !

Hey Red & Barb that Alpha drive looks beautiful hanging off the transom! 8)

Red - The whole raised X-dimension on the Intimidator has to be about the most interesting little piece of info on these Glastron Carlson boats that I've heard in a long time. I can't remember that ever being brought up. Guess you don't need one of those expensive, impossible to find, Alpha SS drives if your running a 'timi. That would definitely explain where the boat gets some of its speed.

Won't be surprised if Barb is able to turn something taller than a 24P.

I agree! Very interesting. Definitely could explain where they get some of their speed.

Splash Day  !
25 + mph .. Wind - lake 5ft low, but We Done It !
We only had about a 1/4 mile to run it out before we got out into the lake where it was too rough for the boat, but we done our best to stir that cove up.  The exceleration is Awsome, especially from 35mph up to about 65 it holds ya back in the seat, the prop works great, but the speedo started picking up air in low seventies skipping over the waves and would fluctuate back to the 30's and 40's when we got out into the heavy chop. Actually, the best speed was 73 / 75 mph turning 4800, the chop was just too rough to trim it up much, but the boat did handle really good with this prop.

Impressing Cruise speed ... at the top of the primaries - 3000 rpm - the speed is 45 mph, that motor is using 5 to 5 1/2 gallons an hour at that setting

We took the boat by the scales on the way back from the lake, 3000 pounds with half a tank of gas on board,  I figure the trailer weighs about 800 pounds, I have weighed a trailer similar to it before at the same scales.

LOL .. yea, she was pleased, Funny though ... the wind was blowing tears back to her ears .. really.  I'm anxious to take it back out in better water .. the lake was Rough, so we stayed pretty close to the cove, and I got to set the trim limit switch and gauge, we couldn't really tell where the trim was, and the rpm never got up to 5000.  we will get it finished up during this cold spell, and try it out again in a couple weeks probably.

My favorite video was when you revved it up on the trailer at the landing. Sounds mean! The Intimidator originally came w/80 MPH speedo. Like I say over on the national site, "Glastron Carlson - Made for putt'in the hammer down!" ;D

Hey Andy .. I still got another 2000 model 5.7 vortec to build, a 4 bolt main thick block, I've heard this one run, it run good, so it's a good builder, has all the efi stuff, sensors and computer, but I will probably carborate it.  I am anxious to put that black scorpion stuff on my new motor, and if it give's me One little problem getting it to perform,  I'll carborate it too.   the Carlson in the background is a friend of mine that just happened to be out at the lake that day, he brings it to the shows here.

Okay, I have a few more motor questions for Olered....

What are these motors you are using based on?  I am under the impression they are based on traditional small block Chevy motors.  Is this also the case for the various motors that Mercury Marine is selling?  Their 4.3, 5.0., 5.7, and just scream to me 'I am a GM short block underneath'.

What I am curious about is whether any marine motors have embraced the new LS motors which GM has been putting out for the past decade or so.  Reading the car magazines it seems there is a lot of power to be made with these motors in comparison to a same size & weight SBC.  And the aftermarket has come to the scene with plenty of bolt-on parts as well.

The real sexy pipe dream idea is...  It is my understanding the traditional SBCs & LS motors have different motor mounts.  If someone is rebuilding the floor, stringers, and so forth on a classic Glastron....  Why not also change the motor mounts and put in a LS style motor?  I think that would be a great mix of a classic boat with modern performance underpinnings.

(Yeah, I know...  If we all had plenty of money, time, and the tooth fairy would deliver to our doorstep.)   ;D

Thanks,
-Eric

Hi Eric, the engines I'm using are the based on the first generation LT small block 350 cid.  The first one come out in the 1970 Z28 Camaro, most refer to it as a generation I sbc.  With just a few changes, one piece rear main seals, roller cam lifters, higher flowing heads, over the years, the generation I was in production until 1999, and I "think" .. the last one's, including the LT I with reverse coolant flow, was used until 2002,  in high performance cars, heavy duty trucks, and marine applications.  I don't know a Thing about the LS engines, but I will probably be trying to learn something about them after I get my new motor built ... a man is never satisfied ya know.

I went back to work on Barb's Intimidator today, I had not finished out the seat perche's when we took it to the lake, so I dressed them down today and started building the front "kick" panels,  I will be building the front speaker mounts up on them, and I will be building a mount for the sub-woofer above the gas tank in the middle.   I took the alternator to the shop to see if they could crank up the amps on it ... well, I just had to ask, but NO was his answer, so he's building a Delco marine for us that will accomidate the extra battery and system amp, he said the new alternator will put out up to 115 amps .. that should do it.
