You are right Aaron, we just need to get used to using the smaller car. yes you may have to go a little slower but in the grand scheme of things you do not lose that much time.

I've always noticed that as well. Tow vehicles in Europe are much smaller. Are they rated for more weight in Europe? Only thing different here is we tow 5000 lbs at 80mph! Not sure if a Passat can do that.

Europe uses towing figures based on much less tongue weight, and moves the trailer axle forward accordingly.  This allows much lighter vehicles to handle the tongue weight of the trailer.

They also limit speeds when you're towing thus controlling the load better with speeds limited.

I believe that trailer brakes are required on lighter trailer loads than in the US as well, so the vehicle has less braking forces from the trailer.

Different philosophy on how best to control the load.

And double bottom rigs are not uncommon; ie, a truck pulling a camper (usually 5th wheel) with the boat behind the trailer.
As for pulling a trailer with a little car, that's just an accident waiting to happen.
I once witnessed a van and camper go end for end and roll several times after it passed a semi.
Their weekend got ruined in a split second.

The Subaru Outback is rated for a 2700 lb towing capacity.  My daughter bought one for that reason. When we started looking it is the only vehicle in that class that could pull.  Everything else was rated at 1500 lbs.

Sorry Dan but that’s just a myth. As I said, in Europe hundreds of thousands of trailers of all kind being pulled every year and I’d bet 100$ right away that we have less accidents with trailers than the US. Trailers and cars have to be inspected every two years by a safety organization. In Germany you need a special drivers license when towing a trailer above 1.650lbs.

Brakes are required above 750Kg/1650lbs.

My old Passat was rated for 2.100Kg/4.700lbs and I did 90 mph without any trouble (have to mention that the speed limit is 50 or 60 mph when towing a trailer). And the best? It still got 18mpg.

That's actually a really good idea. We should have the same here. I am sure most trailer accidents are driver error.

I agree with both of these. You see too many people pulling trailers, campers, ect. that are too heavy for the tow vehicle. For example 1/2 ton pickups pulling a bumper or 5th wheel camper down the interstate with their front end pointing up in the air and reducing steering.

I always get a kick out of going to camper and rv shows and hearing salesmen telling someone that their 1/2ton ford can pull a 35ft camper that has 1/2ton towable signs all over it. I have saved a few people from making bad mistakes.

Well Carlson,

We're going to have to disagree.  I stand by what I said.  As for going 90 mph towing anything much less in a small car.................

I will say I believe the tow ratings manufacturers put on cars are about double what they should be.

You're basing your opinion on the US philosophy for towing...doesn't really apply to the way they calculate it (and adjust laws accordingly) to keep their drivers safe in smaller tow vehicles.  Just different schools of thought on how to do it safely.  Both work perfectly fine.

Well then you must be correct Dan. Just looking at the motor vehicle fatality rate tells the extreme opposite but okay
And saying this more than 90% of the Europeans tow with a “small” car.

Just to give you a brief number - in 2017 we had 197 accidents involving 2 deaths with car/camper combination in Germany.

Quote US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:
“Nationally, between 1975 and 2013, more than 17,000 people have been killed in accidents involving a passenger vehicle towing a trailer, according to estimates by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Since 1975, there have been more than 1.3 million such accidents.“

But that’s enough for now don’t want this 2020 Corvette thread to get too far out of hand.

"C8 dealer markups stink, but you’d hate the alternative more"

Lengthy article on the anticipated dealer markup on the 2020 Corvettes. Apparently the factory has no control over the markups, and the rumor is markups of 25 to 45%, meaning the $60,000 base price of the Corvette inflates to $75,000 to $87,000.  Article mentions that some dealerships may sell at just MSRP.

This is my poor imitation of a Mercury Marauder - 1999 Ford Crown Victoria with some rust and dents. 84,000 miles.  Love the car. Easily pulls the CVX-16. The Honda Accord is covered in the garage for the winter, and the Crown Victoria with snow tires is the winter beater.
