Concided this, changing to a 4bbl is just fine, and yes a noticable difference as long as you don't
put too big a 4bbl, remembering the 305 has smaller valvesand often smaller chambers. Jerry is right, more gas you can burn creates more power, but it's got to be able to get in and get out with a full clean burn, not get trapped in the combustion chamber and can't get out, causing a black (rich) plug burn.  Run the numbers on the original carb on the motor now, ten choose a 4bbl carb with a step or so above the original cfm.  Example ... the original carb flows 350cfm, I'd choose a 450/500 cfm 4bbl carb, if the 2bbl is a 500cfm I'd choose a 600 cfn 4bbl.

As I stated on one of your earlier posts I had two engines with 2" valves; the old Ford 312 and a 65 Vette 350hp 327 (possibly 2 1/8").  Don't know the cfm on the Vette (Holly).  On the 57 Ford Convert I got rid of the Holly and put a Carter AFB from a Cadillac on. (Same as Eldebrock)  I used an exhaust gas analyzer to jet it properly.  Red and Jerry are right about the valves.  The 305 had small valves.  I think they used them in Monte Carlos and truck engines.  Back to my other post the CVX 18 Frisco Boater has; in 1977 it came with a 188 (302 I believe)  Then later a 230 or 260 HP.  I think that was a 305 then a 350 Chevy.  Here's another Iboats post:
Check out Frisco Boater's restoration of my boat in the restoration section-- this 1981 Glastron had the 228hp 305 --it was 28 years old and still doing fine. BUT he swapped for a new 350 marine crate motor with an RV cam- bumping it to 292hp and 408lbs torque.
It went from 45mph with the 305 to 58mph with the 350 and jumps on plane in about 2 seconds -see the video!  The 305s must be pretty doggy.  Hope Frisco sees this.

I'm running a rebuilt 305 (898) motor in my CVZ-18, 2 Barrel carb.  I'm running 54.2 MPH (GPS'd) with my 4 blade Piranha composite prop.

I like my 'doggy' 305 just fine.

I haven't seen an update to the CVX-18 in a while...he's busy having fun on the large cruiser he purchased.

I learned long ago, someone with more cubic-bucks will always have something faster than  you. Build what you can afford and be happy.

I think me and Jerry has both learned that the most money wins most races now days, and that cubic inches require cubic dollars ... leaving me out of the race's
But .. it's still fun to go as fast as I can  :)
