Missing part on Boarding ladder on CVX-16
« on: May 20, 2012, 07:28:00 PM »
Does anyone know what part is missing from the boarding ladder of the CVX-16 to make it stay up? Is the part available? Thanks.

On my deck boat, '86 ssv-191, at the hinge location, the top? half of the hinge is slotted so that you have to pull it up to get it to release and be able to fold? down.  So once you fold the ladder up, it kind of settles back down on the hinge pin, holding it in place  Not sure how else to describe it.  Not sure if your's is the same either.  It also looks like it should have another piece of wood/teak on the bottom rung also?

Looks like a piece is missing because there are two bolt holes on each side and one bolt hole on each side on the ladder. My hinge does not seem to slide, Terry, to lock it in place. Here is another method, clamps, to secure the ladder, but going fast over waves may override clamp pressure.

I would be worried about cutting my foot open on those clamps. My starflite had a nylon strap with a snap on my ladder.

My SSV175 had the same nylon strap with snap ... 'course this was a '94.  But, the nylon did match the color of the boat.

The nylon strap w/snap might be the way to go. I've got the same issue with the ladder on my CVX18. It's nice though if you can simply pull the ladder up with your foot once your up in the boat and lock/snap it into place. Much easier than reaching down to button a snap. But if you don't think you'll use the ladder much then the strap & snap might be just fine.

My '73 Bayflite had the tattered remains of the nylon strap and snap when I bought her. I've been using a bit of rope since, but that's a pain to re-tie each time. I've been meaning to get another strap for it. I'd say go with that or a velcro strip that they have for electronic cords where you can loop the one edge around the fixed part of the ladder and wrap the swing part up.

I'll bet it probly had a nylon strap anchored by a stud at one end. With a snap at the other that you wrapped around'n attatched to one another.

Ya I wouldn't wanna stub my flipper on one'a those dang clamps?

David,

I have a 1984 CVX16 and I think we may have the same problem.  A small piece of white nylon type of material was on the floor this spring and it seems like it may have come off the ladder, as it no longer stays up (no jokes here please).  I have to run to Mankato for a short business trip, but when I get back I will try to get some photos posted of what came off and what is still there.  Maybe I can machine a couple of them.  I think they are just a friction device that has an interference fit with part of the other half of the ladder.

Speed, it would be great if you could determine how to machine the parts that are missing. Let me know what you come up with. We have a machinist and welders where I work and I may be able to help or create the solution. Can you determine if my 1987 CVX ladder is the same as your 1984 CVX?

David,

After closely examining your top photo I am 99% certain we have the same ladder.  If I am correct, you are missing two parts.  They are the same part, but, quantity of (2).  OOOPS!  I see you are missing the mounting screws as well.

Photos: 1,3,4 & 5 show the left side of ladder (looking from the rear of the boat)
Photo:  2 is the right side of the ladder

Note that in photo #2 the small white nylon thingy is broken.  I have removed this to try to get some measurements from it.

Once you compare the photos to your ladder I think it will be very clear as to what is missing.  I do not see a name on my ladder, it would be really nice if we could figure out who made them and just go buy a handful and keep a few  in the parts bin.

Speed

p.s.  So sorry for being a bit late with this.  The Mrs. and I got back quite late from our trip to Mankato and with the rain they are predicting for tonite I had to get the acreage mowed.

I think I understand. The plastic part with hook on top slides down over the aluminum hook on the bottom. Is the plastic part slotted so that it can move up and down? Bet that part can be machined if we can not locate a vendor. Do you have machining capabilities? The machinist at work, I am sure, could duplicate the part out of aluminum.  This is my temporary fix - bungee cord and link.

That plastic part flexes at the narrow part of the hook and pops over the mating piece on the upper half of the ladder.  I have a mill, but, it is not set up yet.  It is still on a pallet on the floor.

The flex plastic method, in my opinion, could be better designed. Speed demon, do your exploring for an answer, I am going to take the boat along with the boarding ladder in a few days to the machinist at work and see if he has any ideas. Will keep you updated.

The same method of plastic flexing is used for kitchen cabinets. I bet there is a cabinet latch out there that could be used. Is anyone familiar with cabinet fasteners?

Perhaps one of the "keep your toddler out of the tupperware" child safe latches in the baby aisle of Target, Wal-Mart or Baby's R Us? They're cheap and you get like 6 per package in case of breakage.
