Trap / Skeet Shooting
« on: October 28, 2010, 05:39:33 PM »
Does anyone have experience with recreational shotgun shooting?  I have a new shotgun and really want to shoot, but don't really know where.  I even have a used pigeon thrower.  I would rather not have to drive to siren to shoot on my parent's land...  Anyone have experience in this area of shooting?

I'm fortunate to have a county run joint about 20 minutes from the house. Known as Knights Trail. Supervised, timed shooting. Nice place.

Pistol range has targets at 7, 25, & 50 yds. Rifle range has 50, 100, & 200 yd targets. There's also a skeet range. Rumor has it they're beginning to dabble in 'sporting clays' as well.

Now that might be something to investigate Brian. Sporting clays is where they throw the pigeon from different angles, roll it, bounce it across the ground, etc. Never formally shot that fashion myself but it sounds purty cool.

Guess I'm gonna have to get me a longer barrel ...

Hey what kind of rig did you buy?

I wanted moderatly inexpensive and reliable...

Bought a Benelli Nova Pump.  3 chokes and a 26" barrel.  Looks awesome, and feels really good too.

I've been to the Metro Gun Club in Blaine.  www.metrogunclub.com
It's a really nice facility.  I went there as a guest of a member a couple years ago.
You might have to get out of the metro a little ways if you want to find a bare-bones kind of place to use your own thrower.
Here's a list from the DNR.  http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/shooting_ranges/list_ranges.html?orderby=city

I have to find a place, too.  My Dad just gave me my Grampa's shotgun, and I'm itching to try it out.  Hard to find ammo for it, though.

A coworker belongs to the Minnetonka Gun Club.
It's about 5 miles west of Mound, MN.
Kinda out of the way for you  :-/

Let me know if you want any more info, I'm sure he would let you come as a guest.

Looks like a decent gun Brian. Just checked it out on the Benelli website. Had to chuckle when I saw Tim Bradley's face & endorsement slideshow by. Tim also endorses Beretta products. Conflict of interest? Guess not if yer as good as he is. The things that boy can do with a shotgun boggle the mind: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2F6Ixc6MQ1Q

Yeah I'd imagine y'oughta be able to find a place to practice with that thing somewhere not too far away? We have a couple state run facilities somewhat close by. Most notably 'Cecil Webb Preserve' north of Ft. Myers. 'Bout a 45 min drive. It is a 'pay & display' park/range that is unsupervised so you're on yer own out there. The shooters have to agree when to "go cold", "check your targets", "go hot", etc. This never used to be a problem to coordinate but lately it seems more & more stupid people are showing up. Not to mention those that speak a different language.

I do most all of my shooting at the Knights Trail facility here close to home. Can't beat it. If for nothing else the sheer # of different range targets. Well that & it's extremely well supervised. These range officers (mostly older retired cops) are on the ball and they don't take no crap. When the range goes cold it goes cold. No ifs ands or buts.

Funny story about Knights Trail is a family of presumably deaf armadillos reside nearby. You'll be blasting away and here comes a *Censored* armadillo meandering across the range. Range doesn't go cold but the head honcho in the booth'll get on the horn and say, "Please do not shoot the Armadillo(s)". And people seem to understand. Heh heh heh. No BS!

Good luck with the new gun Brian.

I've been to the Oakdale gun club a number of times...  Usually just to sight in the rifles for hunting season.  I just looked at their website, and guess what...  They are open to the public every day till the end of november for trap shooting!

Woo Hoo!  I'll shoot my first targets on Monday morning!
