The old exploding hub trick
« on: November 13, 2010, 06:50:15 PM »
Was just settling into my favorite barber's chair earlier when my phone rang. One of the hubs on my little brother's trailer decided to disintegrate upon arrival at the train station ramp. And I was called into action ...

Personally I've never seen anything like it. I've seen axles break & bearings self destruct before but never a hub just fall apart. It was full of grease and the bearings looked okay. The hub just shattered. Wtf!?

edit: Oh well we got her doctored up & he was on his way ...

Happened to a friend of mine while trailering his boat, the casting on the back side of the hub just cracked and came apart. He was about a mile from his house and managed to limp the trailer home with the wheel just barely hanging onto the spindle.

Tell ya what if my bro David had gone another 10 feet fwd that wheel/hub woulda fallen off the axle. And then he'd've really been in a world of sh*t.

I've never seen a hub do what that one did. The area surrounding the outboard bearing simply disintegrated. Fell in a 'debris trail' about 3 ft long ...

What do you think causes that, metal fatigue?  I noticed on my Murray trailer under the V-178 that one of the hubs has been replaced.  (It has lug studs with nuts to hold the wheel on.)  The other looks to be original, with the wheel bolts.  (Real P.I.T.A. when you're trying to change a flat on the side of the road.)  I have been thinking of buying a new hub to replace the old style, and keep the old one as a spare?
