Metallic flake help
« on: June 24, 2021, 06:03:55 AM »
Need to buy matching flake for my 1978 SSV series boat.  Having hard time finding a match.  Like to buy the correct color to restore a few problem areas.  Please contact me if you actually have what I am looking for to sell me or can show me where I can find

Denny welcome to the forum.  Good luck on finding flake that will match.  Search and bought many samples. This older stuff is square flake which most stuff sold today is octagon.  Best direction I can steer you is vintage paint.

Yeah, it’s pretty hard to find the matching flake for this old stuff, the restore that I did on our 1900 and the CV16V8 I’m currently working on I got the big square flake or from vintage paint. But for a spot repairs you may be able to get a good looking repair even with the smaller flake if the color is really close, Roth metal flake has a lot of different options and there’s also glitterex.

Welcome to the forum smokeydm !

As with all flake, gel, paint & vinyl .. the color on your computer or phone screen can be way off the color you want.
Best to order samples of all colors that even come close ..

Other sources for Gelcoat / Metalflake ..

I’ve gotten the flake I’ve used from Lil Daddy Roth Flake.   If the name “big daddy” Roth reminds you of all the 70’s custom cars and paints, this is the son of the master who started it all…. “ rat fink”.  They have all kinds of flake and colors with a lot of flake sizes from baby to monster size… a lot of it even comes in rattle cans that I’ve used to patch match a few bad spots on my projects…Check them out..

I have sampled flake from great lakes skipper, Roth and Vintage.  Roth had a gold that is very close
In color,  does not totally blend, there is several colors to match, the other orange/gold flake is the problem.  Tried Vintage, the bronze will be nearly perfect as a base color, the Vintage Paint bronze gad a red flake mixed in.  Not sure if the base gold is available from Vintage, they seem to have problems answering the phone, text and email.  Sending what I purchased back, maybe that will get their attention

I finally found a recipe that matches the gold Glastron flake. It is a combination of Chunky Gold from Vintage Paint, cinnamon from Great Lakes Skipper and Chunky Copper from Hemway

That?s great that it all came together, sounds like that was a pretty tough job to get the right color. It would be really cool to see before and after pictures of your work

Ok. Need nicer weather to work.  Have the colors, still struggling with best way to apply, trying to blend in. To much new color is noticed, fading is tough to deal with
