Caravan from Twin Cities?
« on: May 29, 2012, 08:49:25 AM »
I was thinking of heading south around 11 on Friday and then though if those of us from the Twin Cities area are all leaving at roughly the same time it might make the trip more interesting if we had a caravan of boats all together, keep an eye on each others trailers, etc.

What do you think?

I was thinking the same thing, however I don't think that we will be leaving before about 1:00

One may be do-able. I can't remember how many of us are going and can't find the page that says who all is going and what campsites are reserved. If no one else says anything about their plans maybe we can work something out!

I'm leaving work at noon, I figured by the time I get home and situated it will be 1:00 I'm in Mahtomedi, so I'm comming from the NorthEast side, we could pick up others from the south on our way through too.

I'm in Woodbury so you may be driving right by me (relatively) if you were going to go 694 to 35E. If Jerry and Dottie are still going they're in Bloomington... This could work out well!

I never heard if Jason is going to make it or not.

So 2 hours earlier or 2 hours later... You guys are making this tough!  ;)

I'm leaning towards the earlier time at this point in case there's hassle getting to the campground and not feeling rushed setting up the tent and what not.

I'll let you know as soon as I talk to the wife tonight!

Sounds great Doran!

Too bad about Red and Barb, but heck, we'll have a great time and make sure to take lots of pictures and video for them to enjoy right?

Dan drives it all the time...so maybe he'll have a better recommendation.

Des Moines traffic is easy btw.

I hadn't looked that close, I was just going to punch it in the GPS and let her rip.  I assumed that I would be going through DM but I've never had any traffic issues there so I didn't think it would be in issue.

I just know that Friday night, hitting DSM around 5-6 pm can get a little hairy, especially if there's an accident is all.  I wouldn't want to be on a street in traffic towing a boat.

I've been forced into the ditch on 494 in the TC's when towing my boat and wouldn't recommend it, so just trying to steer everyone around the madness.

I make that drive a lot, as Doran said.  Going down 69/S.E. 14th would be ridiculous - multiple vehicles, each with a trailer ... you're asking to have the group separated by lights or crazy drivers.

Doran's map is the most direct route coming from up north ... Take 65 around the east side of town.

I don't think there's a big difference in distance or time taking highway 5 vs. 69 ... 69 is the larger road and you'll make a right turn into the State Park.  Coming on Highway 5, you'll turn right in Moravia and then left into the state park (after you pass the resort entrance).

Great! Thanks for the tips guys. GPS's are wonderful things but don't always care about traffic and know nothing of common sense!

Well the caravan idea may not work out after all. My mom usually watches the kids on Thursdays so my wife can get things done, but my mom's under the weather today so I'm going to be getting ready for the trip AND taking my 5, 3, and 2 year old along for the errands.

Looks like I'll be leaving Woodbury at 11 as originally planned. Don't know if you're plan is still 9:30 or if you're looking at a little later maybe we can still work something out?
