Title: Trailer roller replacement
Post by: C512Jim on April 03, 2018, 08:43:50 AM
Since most of my boats are in the 70's to 80's, the trailers are original to the boats and the rubber rollers are showing their age. The few bunk style trailers not so bad, its not too bad to replace a keel v type roller here and there.  The shore-lander style trailers, the support rollers are quite costly if you were to replace all at one time.  Any ideas on economical ways and outlets to keep nice usable rollers protecting your hull.  Thought about marking in some way the old ones if not all are bad and leaving new ones unmarked.

What about removing the rollers and putting a carpeted 2x4 in place of them? More support, less scuffing, no more black marks on your hull? Still get to keep the equaload of the roller setup

Thanks Greg for the link, that looks like way better prices than I have found if I replace Rollers.  Andrews comment about changing to bunk, I have actually wondered about that and if the hulls were actually designed for rollers and if its harder on the hull than a bunk would be.  I get the part about no skuff marks and actually where i launch my boats its easy to float off a bunk because of depth.  I am guessing the right bunk supports might be better than roller bunks.

I just remember Shawn's dimples on his 23 hull from the roller trailer, I have yet to flip mine and see if its the same or not. Makes sense since each roller actually only has a couple square inches of surface contact to the hull, where a bunk would be significantly more. However I have never loaded or unloaded with a roller trailer so I can't say how great they are, and how beneficial a roller trailer is!

I do plan to add bunks under the main engine stringers for more support since the boat will see many miles on the highway.

If its cost savings I would think the wood would be cheaper, but even spraying a bit of paint on all the old ones and replace a couple every year would be better than a big hit upfront.

I loathe roller trailers, and somewhat of a disdain for folks who power load boats at the ramp.  My druthers?  Find a way to convert to bunk if the cost is anywhere near roller replacement.  I use etrailer.com exclusively, great service, good prices, and smoking fast shipping.  Ya think hull rollers are spendy?  The center keel rollers are spendy as well.

I tend to agree that at least in my situation and having access to nice deep launches where we boat I might be better off with two bunks either side of center to get the most support possible.  Taking into consideration like mentioned supporting motor stringer areas if possible.  With the CV27 might need a couple extra short ones in the back just for one side of the motor.  Will take a look back on the videos with mikes CV27.

Here is a pic of my Baja 260 trailer.  The bunks are 2x6, tandam axle with surge tongue brakes.

Good for you. With these boats bunks are the only way to go.

Switching to Bunks. New (to me) Trailer for the CVX-18. I knocked down all the little rust rock chips with wire wheel, slathered in Coroseal rust chemical converter, primed, rattle can painted, and coated the front sides of the crossmembers with white spray PlastiDip to keep from future chips.  I wonder if the boat will fit?  Had a SX175 I/O on it before.

I'd kinda like to see the hull supported by 4 bunks, but two would probably work.   They appear high enough that keel rollers may not be required depending on the ramps you use.   At shallow ramps it helps to have the end roller to set the bow attitude.   I think you will like bunks, I feel they support the hull better on glass boats.
