Sounds to me like it's not running on all 4 cylinders.

I've got to run a compression and spark check, build the carbs and fuel pump, full tune up, etc....just wanted to see if it would fire up "as is".  It did, and it won't be run any more until more investigation and maintenance are done.

Compression checked out pretty well:Transfer port inspection shows rings are in good shape:Skirts look good too:But the water pump, now that's a different story all together! And I found this piece just "floating" (laying loose) down under the shift rod plate!
It appears one of the previous owners ran it for quite a while with no water to the motor, melting the impeller.  Of course the impeller, housing, and plate are trashed.  The molten rubber even filled to outlet cavity and almost plugged the connection to the tube completely.  Sure glad I just ran it for a minute!!!  I can't find any evidence of overheating, but this kinda thing makes my stomach knot up bigtime.

Way to tear into it Mark. So the part with the spring on it was laying loose in there? Hmmm where did that come from? Must be missing from somewhere?
Spare parts are always good to have.  ;D

Hi Ross, I've now been told that it's a "filter", really just a magnet to pick up any metallic particles in the gear lube.  (Also have a magnet on the drain plug, neither of which had much metal on them.)  I found a machined boss inside the gear case where I believe it goes, must have fallen out or didn't get place properly to begin with ???  (Doesn't appear anybody has ever been in there before!)

Got all (well, most) of the parts cleaned up last weekend, ordered gaskets, seal kits, carb & fuel pump kits, water pump kit, etc. from Joe Poole on Monday, just waiting on the parts to come in.   ;)

Thanks David, it's a really good example of why initial inspection and routine maintenance schedules are so important, IMHO.  Just glad I listened to that little voice in my head, the good one that is!   ::)

I actually bought this one to go on the GT-150 Gregg, but since I now have the same motor mounting bolt pattern on all three G-trons, the possibilities are endless.  The PT&T option pushes her just over the 300 lb mark, may be too heavy, we'll see...... :o

According to the manual my 90 weighs 309# with T&T. No problemo carrying it on the V153 or Baja 15ss. Go for it Mark! Perfect motor for a GT150.
