Off topic computer question
« on: May 23, 2012, 09:00:39 AM »
The last time I had problems, somebody from here figured it out for me. So, here I am again! It seems I can't turn my firewall on. No matter what scan or fix I try, I can't get it to work. It's McAfee AntiVirus Plus if that matters. It comes with RoadRunner. I've never had this happen before. My wife doesn't want me posting this, but I trust you guys, so I am anyway! Any clue as to what I can do before I just take the computer in?

Go to  ...  cnet.com
Get ...  Malwarebytes  (the free one)
http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?tag=contentMain;contentBody;1d

Install, update  ...  boot into safe mode (F8) ... run it with a check in "Full System Scan".
Delete all the bad stuff it finds ...

Reboot ...

Get rid of McAffe ...
Back to cnet.com and get "Antivir" (free version)
http://download.cnet.com/Avira-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10322935.html?tag=contentMain;contentBody;1d

Install and scan ...

Cross fingers and hope it helps ... LOL

Not sure on McAffee, but Norton take over your firewall and uses it own.
Make sure your Windows Defender is turned on and updated.

I second what Gregg has already said. Another option that I use is Avast (avast.com). It's also a free anti-virus program that I've never had a problem with.

Another great program is C-Cleaner from piriforms.com. It'll glean all the junk out of your system and clean up any registry errors as well.

I have the free AVG and use fireFox. I just don't get problems.
