Gel coat polishing
« on: May 26, 2012, 10:05:37 PM »
I finally got done with the sanding, started with 150 grit, then 220, then 320, 400, 600, 1000 and it looked great.
started the polishing with the super duty 3M Jeff sent me ... it ain't the same stuff we used to get from 3M, but it's alright I guess, maybe it was my sanding, but with 1000 grit, you would think Super Duty would take out the mynute sanding scratche's ... especially using 1000 grit wet for a final.  I wet sanded from 400, 600, and the 1000 but I can still see sanding evidence ... thats what ya gonna see at Rathbun, I'm out of time and I'm tired messing with it, it's time to get it back on the trailer.

I bet it will be the bell of the ball. I can't wait to see it in person for the first time.

We were supposed to go camping this weekend with the family. Our middle daughter and kids took the motorhome. good thing it's been raining all weekend. They would have been in trouble in a tent. She hops to the bathroom and has learned to pee standing over the toilet. (don't mention I told ya that, but it's just the 2 of us that know) It's getting better, but still doesn't bend well. No hard feelings here we love you guys although there were a couple times I was going to tell ya to go see yer old friend Bill W., but I think that's all better  (I hope)
I sure have my fingers crossed for Rathbun, although we may come without a boat. It's just too hard to get everything done I have to do, or maybe I'll bring the Larson. That's all set to go. We'll see. I'll tell Dottie you guys were thing of her.

Red..
After doing Tim's Timmy with 1500, 3000, compound and FI 2,   I redid mine with pretty good results.
The 3000 really bring out the deep shine ...
Shawn said he use to have to compound for hours to get what one pass with 3000 will do.

Jerry, I'd say why beat yourself up about it. Take care of Dottie and bring the Larson. There will be other opportunities for the current project. Just wouldn't be the same without you two!

Yeah Jerry...I know that the Larson is more of a lake boat and you ought to do pretty well on the lake with it.

Have some fun on the water and then finish the other boat up for the Red Wing meet.

I didn't like the results I got with the 3M products, although I have sworn by them for years, I went to Oreilye's and got some Mcguires diamond cut compound and it started coming out, not liike I'm proud of it, but I can live with it for the rest of this this year, I'm just tired workiong on it. it looks good from a distance.

That looks real nice, Red.  My wife loves the sparkle.  We'll definitely have to do some flake in ours when we can get to it.

wow wish I had the confidence to sand (worried I'll eat through the gelcoat)......anyway, (sorry in advance for the stupid question) with your setup it looks like your in your garage - how did you get her off your trailer?

Thanks & can't wait to see her on Friday,
Erik

Taking the boat off the trailer is a slow and careful task for me, first I slide the boat back on the trailer for enough room to place blocks under the transom chines, drop the tonque of the trailer, place the blocks, raise the tongue all the way, and go through a jack and block moving ceremony until between the crossmenbers until the boat is free .. alot easier putting the trailer back under the boat.

I was going to take it out of the shop today and move it around to the driveway, finish dressing it out there, but after watching  the  news and weather,  we expecting rain thunder storms and hail the next couple days, so I left it back in the shop, that's going to be a problem pulling it around front if we get much rain.

Well, it looks like a no-go here. Dottie went to the Doctor today and he said it looked good, but she has spasms that she looses the use of her right leg. She has a MRI scheduled for Thursday morning. It may be OK, but that's not the bad part. The starter is going out in the motorhome and I don't dare take it until I replace it. Normally not a big thing, but it has headers and I don't think I can get the starter off without pulling the Driver side header off. Things may change, We were looking forward to seeing everyone. I have a spot that's paid for if someone can use it. Next year we'll have the GT160 ready. Yall have fun.

Jerry - it's too bad you won't make it.  Was looking forward to meeting you.  Suppose I'll see ya at Red Wing in August.

I'm going to borrow a tent and stay at the campsites - haven't registered/reserved yet - perhaps I'll take you up on the one you'll be leaving vacant.  More than likely the wife will drive home each night and sleep in her own bed (we're about 25 minutes away), but the kids will be stoked to have their first camping trip.

I hope Dottie heals well & heals quickly.
