Issue #2 with Goldie - Power Steering cooler leak
« on: June 03, 2012, 11:55:30 PM »
Developed a power steering cooler leak at one of the fittings over the weekend.  Luckily, my 'box o spares' has a spare!

Any tricks to changing this out?  Seems pretty straight forward...

Oh...and the Friday afternoon outdrive rattle issue I had...can't replicate it.  Boat runs & idles great, and the outdrive looks & sounds fine too.  Put my ear against the upper housing...smooth as can be.  I did find a long lost bolt (small) in the bilge...think I found the rattle...I forgot I lost it.

Should just be hose clamps to switch it out, can't think of any issues other than how fun it is to get to. I'd have bolts or something handy to block the steering lines so power steering fluid doesn't run down your bilge. Other than that, shouldn't be too involved. Just look at your spare to see how it's mounted.

Rattle is back...

Its coming from the lower gear housing (prop shaft area).  Going to drain the lube and see what's up.

Maybe it's not fully engaging into gear? Or does it make the rattle in neutral too.

Neutral.  Seems to go away in gear actually, and seems to shift fine.  Maybe I'll go through the adjust procedure again tomorrow, new cables, I suppose they could have stretched?

Dunno...gear oil is clean as the day it came out of the bottle, no water, no debris on the magnetic plug, no glitter, is clean blue/green color.

Doran

While at Rathbun, I would move the lever forward, and the lower unit would jump into gear, then jump back out, and do this 2 or 3 times as I was quickly pushing the lever forward even more to get it into gear.  My mechanic said today that it needs a little adjustment, just as Jeff told me at Rathbun.  Mechanic said it is typical after a new drive unit is installed to have to make some adjustments as it breaks in.   Likely the same for new cables.   ts

You might hear a little rattle only when the boat is out of the water when in neutral. It usually means the shift cable is just a little out of adjustment and not fully "centered" between fwd and rev. Sometime you may hear it if the drive is tilted up while it is running but once you lower the drive it goes away.

That's exactly what happened this weekend.  I'll adjust them again.  Cool!  The $50 outdrive lives on!

I had to readjust mine this spring after pulling off the outdrive. They sure are picky. It's difficult to get in exactly the right spot.

Not that hard to adjust the Merc shifter. Here's my procedure:

1) Make sure the upper control cable which comes from the control box is adjusted to a distance of 7 & 1/4ths inches from anchor pin to anchor pin with the control in neutral. Adjust the barrel on the cable if necessary.

2) With the control in forward adjust the barrel on the lower shift cable to fit the cable between the mounting studs with the cable collapsed and the prop locked in gear counter clockwise.

3) With the control in reverse adjust the front cable mounting stud in the slot to fit the cable between the mounting studs with the cable fully extended and with the prop locked in gear clockwise.

4) Repeat steps 2 & 3 to verify their settings.

5) Reinstall cable mounting washers, nuts, and cotter pin.

When tightening the nuts that hold the cables on their anchors do not make them so tight that they can't pivot on the studs. Leave a little play for the washers to spin freely between the nut and cable ends.
