carlson glastron forum? regional or national?
« on: January 12, 2018, 05:12:38 PM »
Good afternoon List-

Last weekend, I towed home a 1973 Glastron Carlson cv16 ss, with Volvo engine.  The boat needs a lot of attention, but is complete, as far as I can tell. Some pics here...

https://www.flickr.com/photos/99202596@N05/albums/72157689172577102

My main question- I live in New Hampshire- being a part of a Minnesota/Wisconsin forum seems odd.  I tried to subscribe to a national forum, but my subscription has not been "accepted/approved" yet, 5 days so far.  So I tried this one- here I am.  But, what is up with that national forum?

My second question - I currently own and use a 1970 MFG Gypsy with outboard, kept at our small cabin on a nearby New Hampshire lake. That boat runs well and looks very good.  I know "boats", I just don't know Glastron boats.  I am VERY familiar with the motor (I know old Volvo cars well),  but am not so familiar with the glastron boats themselves.  I am under the impression that cv16 ss boats are not common... so I think getting this one working again will be a good idea.  I don't really want to "restore" it, I just want to use it.   I would like to know of some sources for information, opinions, and perhaps some parts.

Thoughts?  On the national forum?  And on the boat?  Parts sources etc?

Sincerely,

Bob Woolner

Welcome to the group Bob! We accept anyone from anywhere. We have members from Europe and all over the US.

The classicglastron.com forum has been dead for several months now. Hardly any posts. I think the Facebook groups have pretty much killed it.

You will find we are a very active group.

The cv16ss depending where you are in the US is fairly common. If you watch the GCOTD thread in the for sale section quite a few pop up from time to time.

Good luck on the rebuild, and dont be shy and ask us any questions.

Glastron boats are similiar to other fiberglass boats of the period.  Wood stringers, floor, and transoms are susceptible to water damage and rot.  Give her a very thorough cleaning and inspection, rotten wood components generally reveal themselves with stress cracks in the glass, soft spots on the floor, and leaks through the transom.  It doesn't need to be absolutely perfect to be enjoyed, but don't skimp on the safety items, such as the proper marine engine items.  The 16ss is a nice craft, rare in perfect original form, but they can be found.  Welcome to cgoamn!

Good afternoon again-

THanks for the welcome words.  I don't think I NEED to join the national forum, especially if it is dead.  And as this group is active, and if it's not crazy to join a regional group, I am happy to be here.  Done.

The ice on the lake is feet thick,  and although a good deal of our snow melted away during the past 2 days of warm weather, I won't be actively working on the boat for quite a while.  Plenty of time to look through past forum-posts here, and look over photos of other cv boats.

I note that someone in Poland has bow medallions (and other decals)  listed on Ebay- I have an intact bow medallion, but no emblem.  Does he (or someone on this list) have the CV decals?  I "ebay-messaged" him, but no response yet.  That medallion-decal seems to be one of the few parts missing from this boat- that, and the center of the steering wheel (which may not be original...). and the carpeted plywood bits that go on either side of the engine cover, just below some vinyl padding.  Most everything else seems to be there.

I am planning to read, and study, and then later, after snow-melt, start cleaning and inspecting, and see if the engine fires up.  With luck, it could be on the water this Summer!

Sincerely,

Bob W (Hillsboro, New Hampshire, USA)

Between Aaron and Maciej you can get almost every emblem / decal needed to restore most G/C's.
The "some one in Poland" is Maciej , link to his eBay store ...    https://www.ebay.com/usr/szczecin1994?_trksid=p2047675.l2559

You would need this one for deck ...

My chrome plated plastic disk was chipping so I got the SS disk ...

All his stuff is very well made , 100% positive feedback on eBay.
If your on Facebook ... He's in the Glastron groups.

Because of forum updates and Photobuckets not supporting third party hosting, most pictures are gone on this and the CGOA forum.
Sorry ... We lost a lot of great info ...

Your steering wheel isn't original , see picture of wheel below for original.
Your decks been painted.
Vinyl has been redone.

On your stern (red circle on picture "cvSnumber") is a number, if you post it we can tell you the year built.

Good evening-

My hull number is... CLV 00797M73I

Should I bother looking for an original steering wheel?  Any leads on that?

I was assuming I would need a hull medallion that said "CV".  No?  Something else is more "correct"?

Yes, the hull has been badly painted, with metallic blue.  It looks good from 10 feet away- horrible up close.

I figured the vinyl seats were replaced at some point- pictures "from the day" show some vinyl with pleating.  I suppose, when these existing vinyl seat cracks truly open up, I will look into replacing/recovering with something more original.  That will be later.  Much later.

Again, I probably won't get anything done on this boat for a few months- I am hoping that I can get the motor running, perhaps replace hoses etc. as needed, and... USE it this summer.  Restoration is not what I am after.  It's just sort of nice that most of the bits on the boat seem to be there, even if they are pitted.

Sincerely,

Bob W

Yep ... Understand that you just want to get it running and use it.
By serial number ... it's a 1973 model.

Early CV16's used the GT decal I posted, 1974 and later used the CV decal.
Note that he has 3 decals, "Glastron GT" version were on GT150 & GT160's , "Glastron GT Carlson" were on the CV's until 1974 , when they went to the CV decal.

Decals and steering wheel are up to you, which ever you like the best.
Best to make sure all the expensive stuff is good before starting on minor details ...

Good morning-

Thanks again.

Is there an HIN decoder on line somewhere?  I found this website page...http://www.classicglastron.com/gl-identifying2.html   that implies that there is coded information in the hull number.  I understand the "year of manufacture"  part of that number.  What does the rest mean?

How rare are the boats?  Any idea on numbers made?  Or of survival rate?  I own a few cars that are rare enough that some people keep registers to track what remains.  Is this boat rare enough for that practice?   Does anyone keep a register of hull numbers?

Do you have an online album of detail pictures of YOUR boat?  Flikr? Googlephotos album?  That would certainly give me something to study over the next few months until Spring arrives.

Sincerely,

Bob W

There’s no Carlson specific vin decoder that I’ve seen. 73 was the first year the HIN was molded onto the stern on the CV’s. I have a 72/73 I/O hull behind the shed waiting to go to the junkyard in north central CT just south of Springfield, MA. Most parts are gone, but I have an engine cover and a windshield frame if you need parts. Also a nice fuel tank that needs to be pulled before I haul it to my town dump. Waiting on the warmer weather to cut a hole in the foredeck. A previous owner dropped the engine on the stern and basically destroyed the top deck when removing it, so it’s too far to be fixed.

If your goal isn’t a restoration, but you’re not happy about the current paint, Interlux makes some really nice roll and tip paint that’s easy to apply and looks great. Merton’s Fiberglass in West Springfield, MA is an excellent local source, too. The owner is happy to answer questions and also refers local businesses when he doesn’t have the right product. And if you don’t like that steering wheel, I have a wood Merc Ride Guide with a square hub. I have older wood style wheels, too. I even have a little Glastron G for the center cap. I’m a bit of a horse trader with boat parts, lol!

Good morning Ray-

Thanks.  As it gets warmer, perhaps I could come down 91 for a visit, before you scrap your extra hull.  As I have no idea what steering wheel hub or spline is on this boat I have, I don't know what to look for, for replacement.   But yes, a wooden rim, similar to what WAS there originally might be nice.  But again, as others have pointed out,  I really should get the bigger bits working, before I worry too much about the smaller bits.  The motor is not a worry for me at all- the outdrive might be, as I have no experience with those.  Electrics and guages are not a worry, will just require some time.  Hull looks good, floor is good, interior is OK...

My engine cover is compete- it is unhinged, but again, the hinges might very well be somewhere in the boat- I haven't gone through it yet, as it is stored at my camp, 25 miles from home.

I am content with the paint for now.  Oddly, the "new" paint does not wrap around the stern- which remains the very very faded metallic blue gel coat.

I did just now find a couple of sites that gave some information about the HIN- my boat appears to have been built in April  (http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/hin.htm)  But the prefix that I have written down (CLV) doesn't really seem right- that translates as... Calvert Manufacture Enterprises?   http://www.boatsafe.com/links/index.htm    I wonder if I mis-read that prefix- have to check sometime.

Shall we take contact information off list/forum?   My email is   rwoolner@sau66.org

Sincerely,

Bob W
