Off Topic of the Off Topic - 2020 Corvette

"Ford Now Makes an Cast-Iron Coyote V-8 Block for Drag Racers. The Ford Mustang's 5.0-liter Coyote V-8 is a fantastic engine, but being made of aluminum, it has its limitations. Though lighter than iron, aluminum is also more malleable, which is why an alloy block can't handle as much horsepower as an iron equivalent. Ford Performance recognized a market for those looking for a Coyote V-8 that can withstand higher power levels for sustained periods, so it just introduced a new block made from cast iron instead of aluminum.

Called the "Werewolf," the block gives drag racers a solid option for big power numbers. Nicknamed "Werewolf," this isn't your average iron block. The material is Class-50 iron, meaning it's a lot stronger than the stuff you'd find in normal engine blocks. Changes to the design include 12-mm head bolt holes, billet steel main caps, drilled oil passages, and a raised crankcase ceiling to create more clearance for the rods. The cylinders can be bored to 95 mm and stroked to 99 mm, for a maximum displacement of 5.6 liters. The 100-mm bore spacing, main bearing bore size, and deck height have been carried over from the normal Coyote design unchanged.

It's clear this engine is aimed squarely at drag racers looking for more reliability from their high-output engines.

The engine will likely be used by builders looking to achieve around 1500 to 2000 horsepower, citing that as the reason why the cast-iron weight penalty isn't an issue. (If you're already doing wheelies off the line, what's another 100 pounds in the nose?). Ford Performance expects the block to become available to customers starting in the first quarter of 2020, priced between $5000 and $6000."

"The Ford’s 2.3-liter EcoBoost makes 310 HP and 350 lb-ft (475 Nm) of torque, while the Chevy’s 2.0-liter produces 275 HP and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm). Do the Mustang’s superior power and torque levels make much difference in real life, though? If drag racing is a big part of your life, yes – otherwise, not that much."

Those 4cyl mustangs have more power than my 03 Marauder had with a DOHC 4.6 also used in the Mustang Cobras from that time. Crazy what can change in 16 years.

My 2017 Honda Accord V-6 3.5 with 6 speed manual transmission is rated at 278 HP and 251 pounds of torque. The V-6 was replaced by the 4 cylinder turbocharged 2.0, and the specs are now 252 HP and 273 pounds of torque.

A side by side acceleration of the V-6 and the 4 cylinder shows the 4 slowly pulling away from the V-6. Plus better gas mileage and 180 less pounds of weight.

But there is something about owning a V-6, the sound of the exhaust, the reliability of the engine, the understressing of the engine over the 4 cylinder. Plus I like the styling of the coupe vs. the fastback look of the 4 door sedans models in 2018 and beyond.

It's pretty amazing what these little four cylinders can do. Take our Subaru Outback with its 2.5i boxer engine and CVT Transmission. It pulled a single axle u-haul trailer from Central City, NE across southern Minnesota to West Salem, WI empty and then pulled it back to Central City, NE with around 1000 lbs in the trailer and never flinched. I set the cruise at 60mph and got better gas millage than my Yukon going down the road with out a load. I believe we averaged around 18mpg.

I am really contemplating purchasing a second Subaru after that trip.

I went to Honda's web site to see what a Civic looked like ..
They have a "Type R" that looks kind of interesting so clicked on that.
Then clicked on "Compare" …

WOW !

2018 Honda Civic Type R = 306 HP.
2018 Volkswagen Golf R = 292 HP.
2018 Subaru WRX STI Limited = 305 HP.
2018 Ford Focus RS = 350 HP.

Ford's web site only has a 2019 Focus ST at 197 HP.

The Outback we had towed the CVX18 through 9 states and did more than 6.500 miles with the Carlson in the back without any trouble.

You guys just have to get used to it. My Intimidator was pulled by a VW Passat 4WD. Super gas mileage, fast travel, no problems for thousands of miles towing it. Everyone here tows boat with “small” cars and it’s perfectly fine.

Hello ,  I love the new Corvette! And it’s about time ! Zora’s wanted to build one since the late ‘50’s, early ‘60’s. I’m sure he’s smiling now! I’ve been into Corvettes since Route 66. My dads first was a ‘58 and his last a ‘69 roadster that I have now. My first was a ‘62  and my other current one is a 2000 roadster . Hope to have a mid engine before I die! Lol

You are right Aaron, we just need to get used to using the smaller car. yes you may have to go a little slower but in the grand scheme of things you do not lose that much time.

Car and Driver really like the Honda Civic Type r., 0 - 60 in 4.9 seconds. But the list price is $37,230.  The styling is in your face.

Has this discussion degenerated, from Corvettes (had a '60 and '68) to small cars and 4 cyl engines.

I'll keep my good old 1/2 ton pickup thank you.

Lets make this tread more than a 2020 Corvette discussion post. I suspect that many of the people that have boating as a hobby also are interested in cars, whether new, old, basic or exotic. The common ground between boats and cars are that they both have engines and haul people, either over land or water.

With that in mind, this thread can be used for any thought or picture related to cars or pickups, or anything with a motor.

Many on this thread have contributed interesting information that would not have been shared if this forum were only for Glastrons.

My next posts may exhibit stock pictures of the sequence of my cars over the years.

Below is a stock picture of my first car which I had in college from the years 1965 to 1969, a 1960 Pontiac Catalina, red, 2-door chrome post sedan, 389 c.i., 10 miles per gallon, but gas was about $.29 cents per gallon. Bought it for $1,200 and sold it for $400. What a boat - a mile long!
