Title: Found the Source of the Water Leak in the CVX-16
Post by: David CVX-16 on September 14, 2020, 06:58:13 PM
Finally fund the source of the water in the boat. It was a hole in the speedometer line where the rear seat side compartments are. The speedometer line threads above the compartment, and is bundled to all the other lines going from front to back.  I put my finger on the line while the boat was under way, and could feel a high pressure water stream. Another indication of a leaky speedometer line was a low MPH reading. After boating for the last five times, about one to two gallons of water drained from the transom plug. Now to fix it. But it was the best water leak I can think of. Could have been much worse.

Prior attempts to locate the source included backing the boat on the trailer into the water until the lake water was one or two inches from the top of the transom - no leaks on the inside of the transom. Also I silicone sealed the bottom of the rub rails, the bow cap, the bow eye, the bolts on the outboard, and two small stress cracks in the hull.

We had the same exact leak at the same place on our 88 CVX-16.  Found it crawling around the floor looking while Jake was driving at speed.  It was a hard one to find .

I have an issue where my speedo drops to 0 sometimes, but I haven't seen a leak. When I take the boat out for the weekend, I get a lot of water the first day (which I attribute to the last wash after the last trip and the floor needing attention) and then nothing, maybe a trickle the next days till the trip is over.

Not sure how much it helps .. but I wrapped foam around cables / wires / tubes that pass thru any point where they came in contact.
Glad it was a easy fix !

I am thinking of replacing the entire rubber line from the speedometer in the dash to the hookup, in my case, the mid unit of the Johnson outboard, routing it on the outside of the bundle of existing lines and tying it to the bundle. Leaving the existing line where it is. Where did you get new lines if I might ask?

I ran new line end to end.  I did  not run it through the loops.  ran along floor inside side storage rails.

Started replacing the speedometer water line. The question is how to rout the line to the front of the Johnson outboard lower unit. The old way did not seem logical so did some research on the internet. Seems that the hose goes directly up from where it is connected to front of the lower unit to inside the yoke and exits at the top, possibly with some help with a wire attached to the line to pull it up or down, whatever way you started the line. I started at the front and worked by way back. Is there a need to put a loop in the line, to prevent water backup?

Main concern is not to stretch, kink, or expose line to being moved on the boat.

Think I will rout it as it was before. The new way seems too complicated. This is the old way:

Made the repairs and all is good. Was hoping that the new speedometer water line would correct the 4 MPH optimistic speedometer, but it did not.

You can see the route of the new line in this picture.
