Title: Fall is a Great Time of the Year
Post by: David CVX-16 on September 30, 2010, 06:42:55 PM
With the river water levels high and full of debris, I still enjoy the fall of the year. My wife and I have discovered the Sucker Lake hiking paths, and we try to get in a walk before dark. The trees are vivid with yellows, oranges, reds, the air is crisp, and the tall trees look like a giant forest. The misquitoes are scarce. Also walked this morning and mowed the lawn. The leaves made funny sounds as they were beaten up and pulverized by the blade. I will enjoy the pleasant weather with family and friends before winter comes.

I love that time of the year up there... hope to be back to visit again in a few weeks.  Going to be a working vacation but hope there is some color left in the trees by then!

For what it's worth I still miss the fall foliage up north. Down here it's either green or brown, with few exceptions.

It's a glorious time of year... I miss the seasons living in St. Louis (kind of with winter).  But unfortunately, also can't take in the color here in San Antonio... green or brown!  But, I guess the extended boating season makes up for it.  :)    Glad you're taking it all in and really enjoying it David!

Fall is probably my favorite time of year. Unfortunately, winter follows fall but I decided a long time ago that if you're going to live here, you had better figure out a way to enjoy winter too. I used to down hill ski but havent for a few years and I snowmobile so...Embrace winter! Too bad its so long though. :(
For me its also good as I get more "down time" Work on indoor stuff that I wouldnt want to do in the summer like getting photo albums organized, having fires in the wood stove, going thru junk and just relaxing more.

Since I do not have a heated garage, working on cars and boats are out. That leaves working on house projects, and there are plenty of those - painting the walls, cleaning out the crawl space of the kids toys (boys are now 20 and 26), luggage, and boxes and boxes of stuff we will no longer use, cleaning the carpet, etc. I mean, if you never go in the crawl space for years, how essential is the stuff? We should have four piles - throw away, sell on craigslist, advertise free on craigslist, and haul to Goodwill. That project will take months. Then I agreed to work for an accounting firm preparing individual, partnership, and corporate tax returns two days a week this coming tax season, so there goes much of the time from February through the middle of April. This is in additonal to the controllership position at the steel fabrication shop three days a week. Guess it is work until something gives out - body or mind. Hope and pray I have both for a few more years.

The winter time outdoors is walking, shoveling snow, and filling bird feeders.  Maybe dust off the cross country skiis or put chains on the bicycles.

There are devices for winter traction on bikes, but I would not do it. When my brother and I were teenagers, we would put a smaller rear spocket on the front also to really gear it down, then put sections of a bicycle chain around the wheel for traction up steep hills. Crazy, but fun.  We would ride through mud without fenders and have a black mud stripe down our white T-shirt. Our mother, bless her heart, now 99 years old, did not mind. We also had a race track around the yard for the 1936 Plymouth and dug ruts in the grass. Again, she understood.

.................black mud stripe down our white T-shirt.........

Ha! I remember those stripes.

So you were even playing with drive ratios as a kid huh? Never heard of anyone changing out the front sprocket. But I guess if it were to be anyone it would be "Dave the Prop Hunter"!
