Title: Donor boat is home!!!
Post by: wexrocks on December 24, 2010, 12:05:27 PM
Got on the road early today to head just south of Washington D.C. for this opportunity...

Chaparal Villain III that met an unfortunate fate. It's funny, I was just saying to Dorelse a few weeks ago that I was looking for a donor boat, something nice, that maybe a tree had fallen on (I was being sarcastic at the time). This one, umm, fell into a tree. The previous owner bought it, brought it home, parked it in the driveway. overnight, the bricks kicked out from behind the trailer, it went down the hill thru his yard, ghost-rider style, and smashed into a tree. bummer!

so, I'll consider it a lucky find... provides me with a freshly rebuilt 454, a Bravo 1, and a roller trailer.

Yeah good for you Wex! For what it's worth the Villain is a purty fast boat. I'm told it was 'inspired' by the Outlaw hull. Guy down here's got one that'll run 80mph.

If nothing else y'ought be able to sell the donor for a couple a bucks. Way to go!

I have to agree, the Villain is a nice boat. A longtime friend of mine has one, so this one will be stripped for extra parts, and for the nice cuddy interior. after that, I'm afraid it will be laid to rest, and appreciated for what it contributes to two very loved vessels.

I fired it up when I got it home. I gotta be honest, this 454 sounds mean!!! it has 4" thru-hull which I will be using. the 330hp motor has a healthy cam. it sounds awesome at idle, and when you touch the throttle, it jumps and twists this heavy thing to life. I have some big plans for this motor as far as upgrades, and OleRed has pointed me in the direction of some cam specialists who can make good use of everything else I want to do to this motor. I think I can put together a good 500+hp motor that still behaves well fairly easy. I have a feeling I am gonna have alotta fun with it!  ;D

I will keep everyone posted with progress, and take lots of pics and video of this build, both motor and boat. I intend to build a nice example, and enough horsepower to back it up. OleRed sets the standard pretty high for Scimitars. a big inspiration to me, and others I'm sure.

Trailer is not bad at all, and the villain is heavier than the scimitar, so it should handle it
nicely. Nice shape over all, hauled it about 3 hours on the highway and it pulled nice, just a heavy boat, and it was a strong headwind, so a little harder on the truck than i would have liked, but it's home now. Not sure that the hydraulic brakes were helping much, but I'll go over them and bearings and rollers anyway. And definately new lights and wiring, they're shot and wiring is a crimp connector mess.

But yes, nice trailer over all, and a good fit, plus I prefer roller trailers, as they are easier (seems to be for me anyway) for blocking, and with this project, there will likely be alot of that!

here's the beast...

got it just about ready to pull today. having a few issues with bolts that are not cooperating, but nothing I can't deal with once it's out, just was trying to lighten the load a bit. going to use the neighbors overhead crane to pull it, as it will go a little better than using my forklift I think. got the outdrive off today as well. parts boats are great, they come apart with hammers and prybars!  ;D

Good Deal Steve ..
Now the Fun Starts .. thats gonna be the first Scimitar with a Big Block that I've seen, do ya know what ratio the drive is ?

Wex - I was curious if you ever did a post with detailed picts of the Scimitar as it sits today?  Sort of the 'before' picts before the restore begins...

OleRed, I will have to check the ratio, not sure. the Villain has a 21p stainless on it, which sounds about right for the weight of it if it is somewhere in the 1.50 range, but I do need to check it.

Dorelse, I am going to start a "project" thread for itn ow that things are actually starting to happen.  ;)
I have lots of pics of this disaster as it sits, likely the worst condition I have seen a Scimitar in, but, that will change!

Nice! That should push that Scimitar right along. Nice that's mated to a Bravo.

just a couple pics...

first, another reason why a forklift is a must-have!

second and third, there is more than one way to remove a transom assembly!  ;D

For a second there I thought you cut out the transom of the Scimitar, I was about to scold the hell out of you!  :o

nah, wouldn't dream of it! but a donor boat... now that's a different story.

like I said before, donor boats are great because they come apart with hammers and prybars, but you can add sawzall's to that list! it was kinda fun in a sick way. I can say that a Chaparal is a well built boat, but, I wanted my Bravo.

Guess there is more than one way to skin a cat when it comes to removing the engine & drive form a donor boat.  :D

slight oversight on my part, but this time it's a good thing...

not sure how I didn't notice this, I just assumed it was a 330hp 454. but this is the Magnum... 365hp.

not that it will be stock when it's done, but it's more to build on, and a stronger bottom end.

dropped off the block today for a dip in the hot tank, and pressure testing, just to be sure.

assuming the block checks out ok, the crank will go for turning, then I can order my Scat rods, and start puting this thing back together.

I am hoping the warm weather this week will melt some snow so I can get the trailer under the Scimitar and get to work on it. and yes, that means there is no longer a Villain on the trailer... it is in a better place now.

I think these equipment operators have too much fun!

Hyperacme, it's coming up blank for me too, but only on certain computers (wierd).

anyway, thanks for the effort in posting the "page 2" thread. since this donor boat is no more, and tear down of everything is complete, I think I will finally start my Scimitar project thread. I've got some warm weather this week, well, enough to melt some snow, so I am going to get the trailer under it, and when things start happening, I'll start the thread.
