Title: Sunday 9/30 Treasure island /red wing/ lake pepin.
Post by: 76bayflite on September 25, 2012, 01:44:40 AM
On saturday I am taking amy to see josh turner at treasure island.  We are staying there saturday night, so  since we'll be in the area might as well take advantage (weather permitting).  I recall jeff suggesting heading down stream from lake pepin and that sounded fun. Might need some advice on where to launch, Tim?   Anyways if the forecast looks decent on saturday I'll take my boat with me to treasure island.

I think there's a ramp at the casino

I usually launch in Red Wing. If you don't want to deal with no wake zones launch at Covil park. It enters the river at the lower end of the second wake zone. Would live to go, just not sure if I'm going to be in town.

Bet Island Campground would let us launch free, then down the Mississippi thru Lake Pepin to the Alma lock and back.

If you launch at the casino there is the lock to deal with and the no wake zones

I'm going to try to camp on our boat at the Island Campground Marina on Saturday Night.  I'll be free to join you on Sunday for a run into Lake Pepin if you choose to do that...  It will most likely be my last outing for  the year, but it sounds fun!

I'd rather not deal with L&D 3 so I anticipate launching at covil park around 10. Island campground is another option, anybody know if there is a place to re-fuel?  Looks to be 38 miles from island campground to L&D #4.

There are Marina's in Wabasha, which is just downsteam from where the Mississippi narrows from Lake Pepin into a normal river width. At 4 miles per gallon, an 18 gallon tank would take one 72 miles - not enough for the run. If I go, it would be to fill the 18 gallon tank and take two extra 5 gallon portable tanks with me in the back seat.

Lake City also has a fuel dock.

Talked to Margi, the owner of Island Campground and Marina just now about the possibility of launching the boats there. They usually do not do this, as the ramp is for their guests, but campers and guests are light now. Margi quoted $10 per boat cash, as they do not take credit cards.

Is there a public launch in Red Wing?

How about 10 AM Sunday morning for launching?

A meal on a sand dune?

If this trip is too far land and water wise, we can do the same thing on the St. Croix.  Boat traffic should be light there also.

Thoughts?

Hey everybody!  I'm seriously excited for this run!!!  I'm bringing Ian (and his pig)...  Not that thrilled about the pig, but whatever.  Anyway...  There are a number of fuel docks between redwing and lake city.  I went town to the end of lake pepin this last year, and it was a really nice ride.  There might be fuel on the Wisconsin side too (Stockholm, etc.).  I would say that the water was rougher the further that you went, but there was a wind out of the north that day, and it was blowing the waves toward the bottom end of the lake.  It was a really great run though.

For those of you thinking of camping...  The tent section of Island campground is only $10.00 per night (i think).  That's the area along the road as you enter.  I'm going to be in slip #14 at the island campground at about 6pm on Friday night.  Ian and I will probably head down to the harbor bar for some food, and then a few drinks on the dock at the marina.  I've got the camper top ready, and i already told him that he better be willing to snuggle if it gets too cold.  Maybe I'll bring a heater instead...  :/

Thanks for the phone call to the campground, David!  Good to know about the launch fee!  I think that it's worth it...  Security is good under the bridge, and it earns you bathrooms and a place to hang out if you like!  It might earn me a cup of hot coffee on Sunday morning!  :)

I don't mean to sound cheesy, but I'm REALLY looking forward to this!  Hopefully we can get a few boats together for a great run!

Cheers!

There are two great public launches in Red Wing. One at covil   park, the other at bay point. Plenty of parking at both.again Covil is down river of the no wake zones.
I might be able to make it.......

A vote for the launch site and starting time?

I was surprised that Margi at island Campground stated $10 per boat. With the cost of gas for the cars and boat (over $100 for the trip in my case), my vote is Covil Park at 10 AM Sunday.

The get together time might be a sand dune midafternoon for a lunch.

I would say that Island Campground is not set up to be a primary boat ramp...  Their prime customers are their seasonal campers.  Being a "free" ramp would potentially intrude upon the comfort of their seasonal rentals.  I agree, I would have liked to have the ramp be free to the club, but I do understand the hesitation.  I think that you would agree that we are treated very well by Bob and Margi as a general rule, so I don't mind paying a few dollars to their livelyhood.

Either way...  I fully support any decision the group makes as long as I get to see you all on Sunday!  :)

Cheers!

Red Wing MN, 55066

Intimidator it is. Found the lower unit leaking oil today. Winter project I guess.

While I was outside my house checking out a boat my brother just bought Lance drive past my place, said he was going to try to stop by Saturday, I told him it is Sunday. Sounded like he might make it.

What is the plan for lunch are we going to stop some where or are we going to do picnic style.
Title: Re: Sunday 9/30 Treasure island /red wing/ lake pepin.
Post by: David CVX-16 on September 28, 2012, 08:02:18 PM
I say picnic style to keep it simple. The CVX's do not have much room in the back seat. Intend to strap two 5 gallon gas tanks to the back seat and the cooler will be on the floor. We have alot of miles to cover and maybe they can be traveled at lower speeds. I'm learning to enjoy the lower speeds of 20 to 30 MPH. Debating whether to use the 20" or 22" Raker, and inclined to put on the 22" for better gas mileage. Still should hit over 50 MPH.

We also should be open to take passengers for those who want to come without boats. Any spare seats available?

On a longer run, I tend to stay around 30mph.  The boat gets the best fuel economy between 30-32.  Of course, I have 55 gallons in the floor, so having to re-fuel is not as much of a worry.

I do, it's a Quicksilver 22" (not sure of the diameter, but it's much larger than the one we're currently using).  I don't know that I have any prop grease left, so you might bring some of that if you have it, and a prop wrench.  Mike, my mom, Liz and myself plan to be there around 10:30, which is more like 11 Bishop time  :D.

Well we made it from Red Wing all the way down to Alma and back approx 35miles each way.

7 boats in total  made the trip both ways with everybody making it under there own power. Good day.

Weather was perfect for a fall run. Could not keep track of the Bald Eagles as they were everywhere.

Of coarse Gregg I did not take any pics, left that up to Amy as she has a lot better camera than I do. Does not take much.

Also the guy with the 235hp cv16 snap a few as we were leaving the landing said he will post them also.

Seven boats launched from Colvill Park just south of the City of Red Wing at about 11 AM. Light chop from Red Wing to The lock and dam at Alma with the Lake smooth but rolling on the way back. Stopped for lunch on the way down just where Lake Pepin narrows into a river again - the spot were my wife Joy and would camp 38 years ago, but now filled in with the high sand dunes from river dredging.

About 75 miles in total. Hit 52.9 MPH with two in the boat and 12 gallons of gas.

Hey Jeff,
Remember how you mentioned how often I see Lake Pepin as calm as it was  last weekend, well, I just past Pepin on my why to Winona. Total white caps. I saw one boat out there, a large walleye boat, probably a ranger. He was in the air a much as the water and it looked like he had a long way to go. Here are a few pics.  If you look close you might be able to see the lone boat.

I have idled through white caps the entire 23 miles of Lake Pepin in the Glastron V-153 trying to get back home for work the next day from a 3 day camping trip from Wabasha to Stillwater with my wife. The tip off of a windy day were the leaves russeling in the trees as you woke up. Even at idling, waves would crash over the deck, up the windshield, and onto our laps.  Then there were the heavy rains (had a canvas top) and lightning strikes. Wish I had pictures. Lived to tell the story.

Last weekend was a picnic.

When we came up for the meet in August there were big white caps on Lake Pepin.  They seemed to be bigger on the south end? If I remember right, the wind was coming from the North.

An interesting place to visit is the Goodhue County Museum in Red Wing. Among other interesting things, such as the past industries in Red Wing, are the sudden storms on Lake Pepin and the resulting deaths. Dangerous lake because it is so shallow.
