Title: SOLD ** NOS Beige seat shells ** SOLD
Post by: Terry_Curran on January 16, 2013, 05:55:55 PM
I have located a pair of NOS Glastron boat seat shells.  They are the ones you see in the GT-160's.  they're beige, I think that's the right color, and have the Glastron emblem on the backs.  Each of the seats has a small crack on the underside of the front of the seat where the trim is riveted to the shell.  I would say one is about 1/2" l long, and the other is about 3/4" long.  I'm wanting to know if someone needs  them before I start  pestering him to sell them.  Let me know.

Those are the seats Gregg, just not black.  Maybe off white? More than beige?  I'll see about getting some pics to post.

Terry,

I'm interested in the seat shells.  I live in St. Louis and found a 1973 (Green) GT 160 in Detroit that I purchased  that I plan to restore this spring and summer.  I have been trying to figure out what I am going to do about seats so this would be a great option.   I assume the plastic can be fixed with epoxy?   I'm sure there is a solution for that issue.   Mark in San Antonio alerted me to your post since we have been trading information and I just joined your MN forum.  My son and I may be coming up to Red Wing if we can work it out with his leaving for college.

By the way, I have already dusted the search lights!

Thanks Much,

Don

If they are molded ABS plastic, MEK will fix your cracks.  I've talked about the MEK for plastic dashes quite a bit.

Basically, you'll take a cheap crayola paintbrush, and brush on the MEK.  Make sure the two sides of the crack are firmly touching.  The MEK will essentially weld the plastic.  Virtually invisible, too.  I used it all the time in cracked vehicle interiors.

I'm hoping to have it done by the fall.   Transom, stringers and floor done by mid-June.   And then I am going to have it professionally painted and the interior done over the summer - I'll build a new back seat.  I have a 95 Merc 115 to hang on it.   Like a lot of these, it looks better in pictures.  I have some sprucing up to do but the good thing is that it is all there - except for the bucket seats.

I pulled the trigger on those seats today.  I cleaned them off with just plain water, and they turned out great.  One of the insides of the seats is darker than the other from how they were stacked and stored.  But the upsides, no difference in the color that I can tell.  There are a few small blemishes.

I've gotten a few responses on the seats.

Btw Gregg, thanks for posting the GT-160 up the road from me for sale........

WOW! How many people with GT160's would give their right arm for a pair of those!

Very few GT160's still have the original seats. Somewhat surprising to me is that Glastron didn't use this seat in any of their other boats. Which is why they are so tuff to come by. I can tell you the passenger bucket seat in my dad's brand new '71 GT160 had a small crack in it the day he picked it up. Something the dealer was going to make right but never did. Why these were nice seats I don't think the design was as robust as it needed to be which is the reason soo many GT160's are missing them.

Someone make a mold from one of these pristine originals before you use them!  :)

Whoever picks them up, you need to take a new (or very sharp) drill bit and drill a small hole at the end of the crack.  The crack is spreading away from the rivet & will continue to spread when you stress the plastic.  The new hole can be small - 1/16" -> 3/32" ... this way, when installed & the plastic is stressed (someone climbing into or out of the boat and using the seat back for support) the stress will be spread evenly across the circumference of the circle and not allowed to concentrate on the point of the crack.  Once you get the small hole done, use the MEK to weld the crack back together.  Then you can fill the hole cosmetically.

We use to do this on our motorcycles when we were racing ... The plastic was always cracking.  We'd drill a hole to stop it from getting longer, then we'd use wire and stitch it back together.  I didn't know the MEK trick back then.

You're right Kip, the shells aren't very sturdy.

Mark, I know a few people in the plastic industry I plan on contacting before the seats are sold.  Hopefully they can be reproduced and made more ridged for a reasonable cost.

Time to go see what other treasures I can find!

Terry,

I know a guy from my previous job who was a purchasing agent that bought plastic coolers and all of the molded plastic signs you see in stores.   He also restores Corvettes (to perfection).   If you would like an additional perspective, I can ask him what he thinks this would entail and what kind of manufacturing process it would take.  He's a rock solid, mechanically oriented guy that spent 20 years working wih vendors to get things made.

Very nice find Terry. Those are some of the nicest ones I have ever seen. I hope something pans out for  making a mold or reproducing them in some way.

Terry,

I'm trying to track down some people to see what they say.  I pulled some of the photos from above and created a document to send them. Most of these people are retired but were very good at what they did back in the day.  Wouldn't it be neat if we could come up with an affordable, durable solution?   I'll keep my fingers crossed.  I just hope they don't come back and say that they can do it but you have to order 50,000!
