Title: Mississippi This Sat or Sun?
Post by: Jason on July 23, 2014, 06:30:38 PM
I want to get the pickle-boat out this weekend as it's getting ignored. Would like to do a "non-St. Croix" run to avoid the traffic. Anyone else?

Kate and me and her two girls would love to go out Saturday...  We are going to Vali-Hi Drive in in the evening...  We wouldn't fit in the 16, but if you want to take the 23, I'll fill your gas tank...

Jason, where do you plan to launch? Personally, I like the St. Paul Park to Hastings and back run, about 28 miles plus more if we go into St. Paul.

Can someone check that boat ramp, or I can do it tomorrow on my day off.

Believe I can make it - take my car back from my son, plus he will want to come along.

If we get enough boats, Brian's crew can be distributed amongst the boats going.

Saturday would be better for me.

I would possibly be up for joining everyone. Me and Jess are thinking about going camping on the river this weekend so just depends if we do or not.

I'll be there at 9:30 with the pickle. I might have my niece and sister and law with me. If not, I'll have room for you Brian.

Anyone else? It's going to be a perfect day and with the way this year has been going we are short on perfect days.

So far:

Right now it is myself and son, Paul. I plan on using the back seat floor for two portable six gallon gas tanks, so I have no room for passengers.

If we need room for passengers, I'll just put more gas in the bow tank and leave out the portables.

Let me know.

Usually after the boat run, we all eat together at the picnic tables by the upper parking lot.

I'm bringing a simple sandwich, yogert, grapes, and chips.

My gas is premixed with oil since I disconnected the VRO on the Johnson 115.

I'm bringing 18 gallons mixed between bow tank and two portables in the back seat floor X 4 miles per gallon = 72 miles.

But I'll bring 5 extra gallons of gas unmixed with oil, and extra oil. You may need it unmixed or I may need it mixed.

St.Paul Park to Hastings Dam, stopped at a cove back to St. Paul Park, lunch on the beach just before the Water Gate Marina on the Mississippi, up to the Ford Dam where Jason, Shawn, and Joe continued through the Ford Dam. I headed back to St. Paul Park.

At higher speeds, the prop would let loose and there was a spray off to the driver side in back. This was the reason. Apparently I thinned the trim tab too thin and it broke off. No prop damage.

More pictures later.

Can't remember the guys name in the Brown CV23. Hopefully we'll see him in red wing. Had a built 350. Said it will do 62! We put on 80 miles on a single tank. We were running on fumes at the end. Hastings to down town Mpls. Great day with 0 problems! Shawn rescued a run away fishing boat for a guy who had no idea his boat was missing.

Apparently I hit 49.3 but I don't believe it. Must have been down river.

80 miles and almost 8 hours on the river...
what a great day :D
I used a full tank of gas (approx 18 Gal) and that marked the second Gallon of Mix Oil for the season.

I used 16 gallons. 5 mpg. Not too bad of mileage. Good old 140!

Looks like a blast. Did anyone need to refuel on the water?
If David burned 18 gallons, thats the size of the tank in the 175 and it would eat more than that, I'm afraid.

none of us stopped
i had about 4 gal in a can i had with (normally would not carry that but i was solo)

This has been a poor season for boating for us. I just don't have a feel for how long a tank will last. We were out once this year after the valve job and I was shocked at home fast the tank emptied. I guess I need to keep the secondary's from opening.
Hoping next year will be better.
Shawn musta used the most.

I did not go through the Ford Dam like the others did, so my miles were fewer. I get about 4 MPH running fast and about 5 MPG taking it easy. I started with about 20 gallons - 10 in the bow and 10 in the two portable in the back seat floor and ended up with 7 gallons.

Now fixing the minor breakdowns of the trip - bought new Exide starting battery from Menards for $64 replacing the same brand 10 year old battary, tightened bolt of mirror, and fixed trim tab. Ready for the next round of things to fix.

well... ya got space for a can or 2.
and ya kno we will wait for ya at the gas dock, or drag you back to the launch if ya run out :)

There's three gas docks between the Hastings dam and the Ford dam.
One a short way up stream from Lion Levee launch.
One under the High Bridge in St.Paul.
and one near the Mn. river / Miss. river junction.

I can't make trip on one (18 gal.) tank, so need to top off with 4 or 5 gal. of very expensive "Dock gas" !

Apparently the gas docks close at 5. I wanted gas but couldn't as they were closed. I think all three of us we on fumes!

Two years ago on the Mississippi with the Glastron group, Jason towed me back the last 2 miles to Lions Levee at St. Paul Park.  Thanks again Jason.
