Title: 1971 16' Shell Lake
Post by: Hotwired on August 25, 2016, 10:46:48 PM
Ok, so it's not a Glastron (let alone a Glastron Carlson)

I have known this boat since it was new.  It is has been my Step Dad's boat since new.  Spent every summer under a covered shore station lift.  Original interior, original everything in very good shape.  Dad is now in his late 80's and has not used the boat in the past two year more than a few hours when my brother is in town from Montana each summer.  Only issue with it is the power trim is in need of a rebuild.  It has a cruiser 165 drive and engine maintained every season by a local marina near Ottertail Lake, in Central MN.  Two summers ago (i think) it had the drive coupler replaced.  Aside from that I don't know of any work done to it and none has been needed.  I am very temped to store it and come get it this fall but I (as a lot of you know) live out west in AZ and have quite a fleet already.

It did not get into the water again this summer.  no one around to use it.  Someone want a really nice old boat that needs just a little work?

I would like to get $1500 for it but would entertain offers.  It really is a nice old boat and gets a lot of attention every time I do get a chance to drive it out for Pizza on Ottertail Lake!

I will post some old pix if I can find some, some day.  To further expound on the story ... My Mom and step dad married about a year after my father died.  Step Dad's wife died within a week of my dad passing away.  My step dad's wife and my Mom were schoolmates back to kindergarten. My grandparents summer homes were 10 lots apart on Ottertail Lake.  My now Step Dad's lake house is the 5th house between the two.  Step dad and his family would spend summers there and as kids, his kids and my brothers and I, all played and skied every summer up through and into high school every summer.  In 1971, my Dad was working for the Local marina, Dunker's Marine.  My Dad sold Alec this boat ... I delivered the boat (drove it across the lake) at the age of 8 years old in the spring of 1971.

I would love to keep the boat.  But, at the age of 52, my Mother  said "The hell you will!  You already have too many boats!"

Neat story Chris, were those built in Shell Lake, WI? Always wondered about that.

I think they were.  Alec (step Dad) has the original brochure that he bought the boat from.  I would have to look at that (I have never seen it).

That is a sweet boat Chris!  Right in my back yard (Battle Lake).  Really cool story too.  The lake I grew up on near Fergus Falls, the fastest boat on the lake for many years was a 15' Shell Lake with a 75hp Stinger on it.  Always admired that boat.  Nice dock and boat lift by the way.   :)

Hello, Is the Shell Lake boat still for sale? I grew up in Cumberland, Wisconsin 20 miles south of the Shell Lake boat factory.

Does anyone know where the Shell Lake boat factory was exactly in Shell Lake? Is the building still there?
