Title: 1972 CV-16
Post by: rayar3 on October 05, 2017, 01:04:30 PM
I'm the 3rd owner. 1st had it through 86. Second owner did basic maintenance, and had it rewired 2 years ago. Overall a clean boat, showing its age well. Floor isn't terrible, transom is solid. I was told the motor has a cracked water jacket. Hoping it's just a gasket. Motor gets pulled next week, then its into the garage. If it ran, it could be enjoyed today. Not sure what I'm going to do yet with it, but I'd like to keep it stock. Dash emblems/panel will be hard to replace and restore. So this isn't a build bread, because this will be worked on as time/money permits. I started a new airline job 6 months ago, so it'll be a nice days off project.

Apricot and Gold are my favorite colors ...
That one looks to be in pretty good shape !
Think flake will wet sand/compound back ?
Interested in seeing how bow tank was mounted ... No rush ...

I just finished my deck and have some brown cedar treated lumber left over if ya need new wood ...
LOL

Thanks for the offer. Someone was throwing out their old deck wood at the dump so I'm all set. I stopped at Trader Joe's and picked up a few quarts of coconut oil, and it shines like new! LOL

I'm going to try and save this finish for the time being. There's a couple areas with slight stress cracks, but really it's clean. Not sure if the faded areas will get better, either, but it's worth a shot.

What surprised me is the carpet. Yes, it's dirty, but it's not really worn, and the backing is still strong on the areas I've lifted. I'm going to try and have it cleaned. I have some leads on fabric, and even some local places that can do the headed pleating.

The motor is a 1980-81, so it's a crank rated 115. Kind of a bummer, if I can fix it cheaply. If not, I'll be looking for an ADI 115 post 83. Part of me wants a early 70's motor, but what I'll do is maybe change the front cover to an older one for the look. Excited to jump into this one because all the "hard" stuff I've done before.

The tear down will begin next week when I pull the motor at my buddies garage using his hoist. Then I'll have a beer party to transfer the hull to the cradle. Here's hoping for no freak October snow!

Ya ... don't need no stinkin' wet sanding , compoundin' and etc. when ya got coconut oil !

Don uses plates so you could drill for newer bolt patterns on transom, then mount older style and go with newer motor/mount holes in the future.

Pulled the engine off with my dad yesterday. Not sure if I should try to repair the engine or cut bait. Needs to be rewired and a 30psi in #3. Options? Buy a rebuilt/restored 72 1150, fix this one, or buy a late 80's inline 115 and put 72 decals and a chrome front cover? I like the idea of a late model trim.

Transom is a little soft, and the front tank is a standard Temco (sp?) gray metal tank in great shape. It's mounted laterally, and whoever installed it made it look like a factory job, down to the ply supports like I've seen in other Glastrons. Since my parts 72 is also gold, I thought about patching the hole on the bow, and other misc holes, too.

Anyone know of an exact metal flake match? Roth?

I'd say buy a late 80's motor and put early 70's decals on it, with the better trim and CDI ...
Steve did that on his CV16 , much easier to set up !

Gil might know a match for the gold ...

Title: Fabric samples
Post by: rayar3 on November 01, 2017, 07:49:15 PM
Received some samples from Naugahyde today. Some come close on color, but not the varying waves of color pattern like the original. The large lighter one comes close, but I'm still looking to get a closer match. The solid colors look boring to me. Also found a place that might be able to heat pleat for me, too. Any suggestions of a closer color and pattern match?

Naugahyde I believe comes from naugasteers?  Not exactly an authority on marine upholstery, but I was thinking marine vinyl was better formulated to handle sun, uv, moisture, etc than other materials.  Looks like the craft has a lot of potential, hopefully the flake can be restored.  The Merc TOP is a great classic OB for that model, but you have to weigh the costs, rebuild vrs a different OB.  If it were me, I'd pull the Merc apart and have a look, could be something repairable.

Yes, these samples are from the aquatic Nauga. I only chose samples that fell into the marine category. I have a few more samples on the way from other brands. You can buy little stuffed "Nauga Monsters" for about $30. The vintage ones pull a premium, but I've found a couple online that seem to match the interior color. Wonder if I buy one I can feed it so I can get a whole interior? ;)

I grew up in the 60's and 70's, so everything was covered with Naugahyde.   Didn't know someone actually created a "Monster" Nauga, pretty funny stuff.

I know you want to make the boat perfect eventually like we all do, but that interior looks to be in really good condition.  Maybe run it as is??

I see your pulling motors and compression testing and so you have some great skills.  Find a nice Johnson 115 this winter and enjoy it next summer before tearing into the floor and transom.  The fiberglass repair work is relatively inexpensive but is time consuming the first time.

My thoughts are: one thing at a time and enjoy it along the way.  I did my flooring first and thought I'd be replacing the motor shortly after but the old girl just keeps running.

Best of luck

David

My vinyl had been redone with some non marine stuff, but I found three small pieces of original vinyl near stern still in good shape, color wise. Look under your stern side padding for a piece of non faded vinyl.

With only one inch square samples to go by, it was hard to say how close I came to original color, but looks pretty good.
I don't think my 1976 CV16 blue was "Blochy" like my 1972 V-156 blue was, but didn't have much to go by ...

Blue is a popular color, so had many chooses in pleated marine vinyl, tan / gold might be harder to find in pleated and transom curtain would need to be electro / heat seam pleats. Sewing in pleats in curtain ... just didn't look right, at least to me it didn't.

If you do entire interior in a color that come's very close, it should look good ... and you'd be the only one that knows how far it's off from original. I'm on a laptop and pictures / colors look OK on some of the samples, but hard to make a choose as things change as I tilt screen / angle of view on laptop ...

Ed know of a place that heat pleats ... can get you contact info ... if you like.

Yes. The Nauga has even been on Johnny Carson. Note they shed their hide voluntarily. So no animals are harmed in the process ...

Still have a Naugha here at the house, been laying around since the 70's. Have yet to feed him anything but I must say he's not complaining.

Toughest part of matching old stuff is ya might come close on the color. Then ya gotta worry about the press pleat, piping/welt, and hidem to finish the job.
Title: Re: 1972 CV-16
Post by: rayar3 on November 02, 2017, 06:58:39 PM
I like the blotchy look, even if it's not a color match. As long as it compliments the flake. I have high hopes for the next samples, especially one called "squash." The guy that did the upholstery for my CVX-18 made all the hidem and piping from scratch. I found a company in NJ that might be able to pleat for me, but I'm open to suggestions.

The boat does show well. Patina is "in." If the motor ran, I'd probably have fun for a season or two until the stress cracks started showing up on the transom! But it's not so far gone that a refresh/restore isn't terrible because everything is there and not falling apart for templates. Plus, I feel that this won't be a hard restoration, minus the flake. I have a feeling I might leave it to a professional after I screw it up trying first.

Doug, I’d prefer to give money to you. Any leads on getting it heat pleated down near you? I found at least one place in NJ but haven’t contacted them yet.

Not offhand but I'll look into it. Do you have a style/color #?

Fyi that price is from my local distributor, Action Upholstery, in Sarasota. Miami (Corp) wanted closer to $17 bucks a yard.

Could probly arrange to have it drop shipped. But if I were you I'd shop around. Gotta be a honest canvas cushion guy closer to you than me? Morbern is a BIG company. Their chit's everywhere.

Thanks. I’ll look locally. There’s a huge local fabric place, I just haven’t made the 30 min drive. It’s like walking through that warehouse from Indiana Jones. Hopefully the backing is polyester and not a cotton blend so it can be heat pleated.

Well, I got as close as I could with a fabric match and I’m calling it good. Slightly darker than the original that was never exposed to sun. It’s a discontinued color, and only 16 yards left that I could find. 10 goes off to get pleated, and the extra 6 is for the rest. Original color on right, replacement on left.

I'd say .. Close enough !
I got 5 yds. pleated , 4 yds. plain & 18 yds. welting.
Had a lot left over.
Better to much .. then not enough ...

I'm hoping that there will be enough scrap on the side for the thin and thick welting. If the guy that did my CVX-18 will do this CV, he likes to make his own anyway. Slowly ticking away at this project. I'll be in full swing when I can open the garage door and let some fresh air in. Ready for spring!

Does anyone know the size of the squares on the pleating on the back panel of the CV16 , I'm in the process of doing my CV21 interior and i cant remember the size of the squares for the upholstery panels that run on each side of the hull . Thanks . Gil

Looks like squares are larger on side panels, then they are on sun pad / engine cover.

Thanks Ray , i am going to have the squares sewn for mine for the sun pad and the inner hull blankets .
