Title: Where is my trailer VIN?
Post by: demian5 on September 21, 2018, 03:34:19 PM
Ok so my 79 CVX-16 has the original Vanson trailer, but I cannot find the VIN number. I found a plate welded to the front on the inside but its only 6 numbers and it doesn't jive with the plate.

The serial numbers aren't (don't jive) the same as license plate numbers ?
Or serial numbers don't jive with serial number on title ?
Most are just sticker that can fall off or become hard to read.
Is there a license plate on trailer ?

Yes there is a plate and there is a serial. The title is paperless and I need to transfer it. old owner doesn't have any paperwork, only on the boat. So i ned to find the VIN. Im sure I can find it by going to AAA with the plate but I's rather just find it and take car of it online.

Aren't serial number and VIN the same ?
Sorry to sound dumb, but in MN. we just get a life time license, which is just a sticker and a reg. card.
Some one that knows more about this will chime in.

Can I ask why you say its the 'Original' trailer?  The matching Glastron aluminum trailers were made by Conroy.  You're saying its original to the boat, (which is also cool)?  Don't believe I've ever heard of a Vanson trailer before.

My last trailer only had a 5 digit VIN and my DMV took that no problem.

Well, the rails has CVX-16 stamped into it.

This is the plate I found welded on the inside of the rail. My bad, 5 numbers, which is what the DMV website asks for to be able to renew registration online... but it doesn't jive with the plate or the DMV system and says one of them (plate or VIN) are incorrect.

Good old CA.

Yep, sounds like an original trailer if its stamped for a CVX-16.  Cool.

Are they looking for a 16 digit VIN?  Like I said, my DMV accepted the 5 digits stamped on my trailer mostly because of the age of the trailer...said that was fine.

I doubt that trailer had a VIN in 79. The serial would be the vin. Call the DMV and explain the situation.

Mandatory 17 digit vin numbers started in 1981. So your 5 digit serial number should be fine
