Too much rain, can't go boating
« on: July 24, 2010, 12:32:33 PM »
The 8 inches of rain Milwaukee got the other day has swept a lot of debris and possibly bodies into the Milwaukee River which flows into Lake Michigan.  The Police Chief said it will take about a week for the bodies to begin to surface.  I love boating on the river and Lake Michigan, but I think I'll wait awhile.  I don't want to be dodging debris and bodies !!!!!!

Yeah I've always hated having to dodge bodies too.

I heard about all the rain...Incredible! All in a couple of hours.  So apparrently some people go swept away?

It's "normal" to find a body about every two weeks in the river.  The homeless tend to live under bridges and in culverts near the river so the police expect bodies to start popping up.  Add a few crime victims, addicts, and drunks and it's a pretty sure bet that there will be some unusual obstacles in the water !!!

Eh. Bodies won't do much harm to yer prop. It's the logs & stuff that will ...

re Crime victims, etc. If Katrina in nwawlins taught us anything it's that no self respecting criminal won't take advantage of a natural disaster. Time to take out the trash.

Guess it takes a few days for them to get all puffy and gassy and start to float. Unlike most guys, dont take long to get gassy.  :D

Well, its not just me then. The rivers & reservoirs are swollen, our emergency spillways are overflowing, and a dam even broke today.

I seriously doubt if we'll make it out again down here this year.

Just watched news film footage of Lake Delhi dam failure D.  (Of course the local news anchors massacured the pronunciation of Delhi, so the Maquoketa River didn't sound recognizable either.)  That was one of our main recreation lakes when I was growing up.  What a bummer!

Mark - didn't realize you were from that area.  That's where my CVZ-19 spent the last 25 years.  What was the lake like?  Looks a little narrow from Google Maps/Satellite views...we'll be looking for a summer getaway here in the next few years...and the man-made private lakes that are very common in IA make me nervous for exactly this reason...

Yup, I was born and raised in Coggon, about half way between Cedar Rapids and Manchester on Hwy 13.  Total pop. back then was around 650 people.  Of course it's been a LONG time since I was up there, and memories tend to be embellished in your mind with the passing of time, but as I remember it was a great lake with plenty of room for water skiing, boating, fishing, etc.  I'm sure there is/(WAS) a lot more boat traffic on it nowadays.

I was talking to somebody on FG about the Wisc. Dells the other day, called up the website, and said "Man, it didn't look anything like THAT back when we used to go!".  Maybe a similar scenario....... ::)

Called my brother in IA last night, they were just there (Lake Delhi) a couple weeks ago on vacation.  He agreed with you D, said it is/was pretty narrow except down by what used to be the dam.
