Manatee Madness
« on: September 26, 2010, 08:22:20 PM »
As many of you know I hate Manatee and would like to see them all returned to the West Indies post haste.

But for some strange reason a Mama Manatee & calf hung out so close to Snake Island today you could reach out and touch them. Literally. The kids from the island were freaking out. Turns out both Mother & calf like belly rubs.

Well 'till some do gooder reported people molesting the poor Manatee. FWC showed up & chased the kids back to the beach. What better way to befriend children than to threaten them & their parents with $1000 fines for touching a Manatee. FWC is a real class act

Not sure voting has anything to do with it anymore. I believe so-called democrats & republicans exist solely to distract one another from what's really going on upstairs. But yes I vote.

The FWC as they're presently incarnated have been collecting Manatee data for over 30 yrs. Manatee deaths attributed to boat collisions historically hover around 23%. Some years better some years worse. But the point is it's reasonably consistent. Regardless of total Manatee population. My county's reward for an extremely low fatality rate was 6 miles of new no wake zone. They wanted 9. Some counties were dealt worse. I reckon Kip Frohlich of the FWC probably said it best, "Boaters are the easiest part of the equation to control."

I feel his pain. Try teaching a Manatee how to read. Or write a check ...

This year so far statewide we've had 56 watercraft related Manatee fatalities. Compared to last years total of 97. However as a result of our extremely cold extended winter a record # of Manatee have died due to what FWC categorizes as 'cold stress'. 27 in '08, 243 so far this year. Feel sorry for the frozen f'ers but the good news is if the numbers stay about the same us evil boaters will only be responsible for butchering 9.2% of the Manatee population this year. WooHoo!

Though I doubt you'll ever read that in the headlines ...

You'll hear it in the headlines..."New no-wake zones do wonders for boat related manatee deaths."

Well on the other hand..if there were no protection, they'd be chopped up and served in Chinas finest resturants. I know that might be fine and dandy with ya Doug, but there are extremes in either direction and I agree that sometimes there is just too much of it and then in other areas, not enough! A nice balance would be good.
I can not imagine that hitting a manatee in a 15 foot boat would be very cool.

Gee, since we are talking politics...

I really don't give a hoot about (D) or (R) this year.  They are BOTH responsible for where we are today.  I am going to the polls and voting "No Incumbent".

The worst thing for the manatee humans ever did was build huge powerplants with their warm water discharges. Before that time manatee followed the warm water south to the Everglades, FL Keys, Cuba and even Puerto Rico.

When it was discovered 30 odd years ago that Manatee were wintering around the discharges instead of migrating. Prominent Marine Biologists of the day warned this was not a good thing. They cited concerns such as the unnatural extended exposure to warm water weakening the animals immune system. Actually making them more prone to disease or infection. This has proved to be true. And in a big way last winter. They also cautioned that nothing on the Manatee menu would/could grow in the immediate area.

But as usual these warnings fell on deaf ears. The gov't had an agenda & they were stickin' to it. Come H*ll or hot water ...  They did not want to be confused with facts. Now, 30 plus years later, in a monument to mans stupidity. Tourists & Manatee lovers alike can go watch the animals suck up to warm water discharges from the comfort of taxpayer built & maintained viewing platforms. And folks at FWC say things like thank goodness for "our" discharges or there would have been more deaths last winter. Absurd?

Time to re-power with wind or solar and eliminate the discharge.
Sorry that sounded political.

You bet yer ass Jerry. (That didn't sound all that 'political' to me btw.) There is an overabundance of untapped solar/wind/tidal energy down here at least. Not to mention hot air from our 'authorities' at FPL. Florida Power & Light aka Florida Plunder & Loot ...

Photovoltaics are becoming more efficient as we speak. Battery technology too. That & some of these new wind generators are incredibly efficient. Sadly it appears the keepers of our 'grid' actually prefer selling to vs buying electricity from customers. Imagine that.

Capitalizing on solar energy might not completely free us from fossil fuel. But it'd be a good start
