Hot Tub Party
« on: September 29, 2010, 09:28:22 PM »
Dunno about you but in my kitchen every so often we have issues with what we refer to as piss ants. Y'know, the little black ones that are barely visible to the human eye? Found a great ant bait called Terro that the little buggers can't seem to resist. Good stuff! You simply put a droplet of the syrupy goo on one of the little squares that are part of the package. Place it near the ants path & wait for the party to begin.

Might take a few hours but boy once the lil sobs home in on it they lap it up elbow to elbow. Some of them are so euphoric they dive right in! (See satellite pic.) Hmm, perhaps those are the hookers ... Well, anyway, their party ends with one hell of a hangover.

I recommend Terro highly. Just takes a lil patience. Much 'greener' than blasting the countertop with a spray can of God knows what imo.

Uncle Dougs pest control tip for the day ...

Terro has been around as long as I can remember.

Find something for the Sand Fleas

Hear ya Jerry. Now those are some annoying little sobs ain't they. Referred to as 'no-see-ums' down here. I'm afraid there's not much you can do to combat them. 'Cept stay away from sand/water?

Some people say 'skin so soft' works. Some don't. Bug repellent with DEET in it does work. But these days most folks prefer not to slather themselves with insecticide/pesticide(s). Myself included.

What to do, what to do. I've discovered that copious amounts of grain alcohol taken internally (well some externally) and maintaining a thick cloud of marlboro smoke around the perimeter works best for me.

Guess if all else fails:

We pulled into a Florida State Park I think around 5:30 with the motorhome years ago. Two kids along. It was around 95 out and we didn't have air unless we were plugged in. Well they lock the gates at 5PM. Nobody in, nobody out till 7AM, so we decided to stay in the parking lot. The Sand Fleas ate us alive. Like hot needles that wouldn't stop. There's a reason you can keep Florida. Sand Fleas, Love bugs Palmetto bugs, gators, and a long list of predators starting with the Governor. Manatees are the least of your problems Doug.

We know what "no-see-ums" are like Doug... we lived in Charleston SC for 4 years.  They must have teeth as big as their bodies!!

Did ya know the lil buggers are crustaceans & not insects? They don't bite per se they just sorta latch on and stick their needle-like thingy in ya & extract your blood. Umm, yummy!

They're thick as thieves right now. 'Specially during dawn & dusk. Dusk is worst. If your outside working on something in the evening yer gonna get bit/stung. They go so far as to crawl over your clothes up into your hair & sting you on top of the head? Now that's really irritating!

Ha! Hey Jerry. My frugal Scottish Dad once booked the family a cabin in Everglades Natl Park at the end of August to take advantage of 'off-season' rates ...  I'm tellin' ya eaten alive would be an understatement. After gettin' torn up by sand fleas & mosquitos all day long outside we discovered the marginally 'air conditioned' cabin had almost as many mosquitos inside. Good news the walls & ceiling were painted white so you could spot the sobs resting between bloodlettings.

This proved to be their downfall. Cuz if'n ya can see em you can kill em. My brother & I terminated 100's with our rolled up FL Tourism magazines. Seriously, in the morning the walls of the room looked like the St Valentines day massacre ...

Edit. Sand fleas are adorable aren't they:
