Burnin Daylight
« on: December 23, 2010, 10:46:19 PM »
"Burnin Dalight"   was checked into Pre-Op today, awaiting the transplant, she is resting peacefully in a warm and cozy shop ... (well, warmer than outside)  her recently aquainted friend, and Doner  "Reds Gold"  (abit nervous about the proceedure)  is patiently waiting right outside the door.
The procedure is scheduled to begin Monday, and should only take about ten days, according to the doctor and his assistant.

Not to be morbid or anything, but maybe we could see some pics of the procedure?  ::)

The proceedure began today, but further examination of the patient revealed some soft tissue under the back seat.  We decided to do some exploatory surgery to evaluate the extent of damage caused by some foreign H2o substance that had accumalated under the floor, we removed all the damaged tissue, some saturated foam mass, and cleaned up the effected area.  There was only minimal damage actually, we removed most of the floor just to be sure all the contaminated tissue had been revealed. The engine will be removed in the morning, and further examination of the subject will be conducted in the bilge area.

Normally, I  have a weak stomach for looking at surgical operations, but not this one.
Questions.
What is going to happen with the removed organ?
How are you going about cutting the old floor out, especially near the hull? I've only replaced a floor once before and used a circular saw ( a bit risky) where I could and busted the rest out but thats not very clean. did you you a small grinder with a cut off wheel or?

WOW!  Made quick work of that!  Project CREEP!  LOL.  Kind of like going to the store for milk and coming home with steak and eggs!!  Now's the time to do it and hopefully you caught the water intrusion before it got into the stringers and transom.

Thanks for the pictures!

We done it about the same way you did, but, Barb and I have a couple highly specialized tools we also used for the job.
.... I use a skill saw also, set 1/2 depth to cut most of it, but on the sides where it joins the hull I only set the depth of the blade to barely cut through the glassing on the floor, then the wood under that is fairly easy to chip out.

Yes .. fortunately this little baby has been protected, stored inside mostly, and the water saturation was minimal and had not affected the stringers at all, and the stringers on this one are completely incased with fiberglass, was not the case on the two Scimitars I have done, they only had been glassed about 2/3 of the way up the sides of the stringers.
Barb wrinkled her eye brow when I began to "tap" the stringers with my little hammer, just a one pound ball peen .... solid as a rock.

Oooops ...
Yes .. we are transplanting the powerplant .. I got carried away,  the "organ" was removed today, looks like we got a little more lipo to do in the hip pockets before we go in with the new motor.

Glad to see I wasnt the only one cornfused about the organ transplant because I thought that was the whole idea.

Foaming under the entire floor. Well I guess that will keep all water out huh? No need to worry about any moisture getting trapped?
Lots of cans of expanding foam from the home store? :D

.. Great Stuff !

Now ... for the Sweet and Sour ... after removing the engine this morning, and the transom assy, I tapped on the back of the transom .. Solid sounds all the way around .. Swweeet,  inside the boat, good sounds on the upper part of the transom, then ... and Then ... thud .. the lower portion of the transom was soft, those dang  "hip pockets"  had water trapped, and soaked into the transom like a wick on a lamp ... well, now for the rest of the story,  take out the flotation boxes, dig out the hip pockets, lay in a new transom.

Crrrreeeeeep!  The scope of this project just keeps growing! Making me want to dig out the "hips" on my 21.  They always seemed dry but not likely!

ARGH!
On the up side, at least its nice and open back there and you're not working under a splash well. Pretty good access.
