Couple Questions on the CVZ-18.

Steering wheel...mine's in sad shape...do I need to find a vintage wheel?  Or will any replacement do? 

What's the feeling on marine starters on ebay?  I can get rebuilt & warrantied marine one's for less then the price of rebuilding my old one...

There are two types of steering wheel shafts on helms. The most common is the 3/4th inch round tapered shaft that is keyed. The other is a square tapered shaft usually found on the RideGuide rack-n-pinion helms. You can take just about any new wheel today and fit it to older rotary helms as long as it has the round taper socket but finding wheels for square tapered shafts could be a bit more challenging. In the pic below is a before & after shot of my boat - original steering wheel vs. newer Grant sport wheel, the helm is the original rotary unit that came with the boat. Both wheels were round shaft.

I've installed a lot of aftermarket starters in boats and many times I've found they don't seem to last as long as OEM starters, especially when the bilge is always damp or wet. I know many of the aftermarket ones are not painted or corrosion protected. There might be something that is done with OEM starters that protects them better from the elements.

I'm just a little frustrated today.  I took my starter today to the 'good' shop to get rebuilt, and they flat refused to give any price range.  Saying only, 'It'll cost, what it costs.'  Sorry, but I don't write blank checks to businesses I don't know.

Would you do business with a roofing company (for example) that came to shingle your house with only a quote for, 'It'll cost what it costs'?  This might be a smaller scale, but its the same idea.

I work too hard and too long to put with with that crap.  I'd rather buy a new one, or 2 rebuilds on ebay.  At least there's a warranty, and I know what it costs.

That's pretty much the reason we used to just install new ones in customer's boats. Starters are cheap enough that it's just not cost effective to rebuild one. When you figure into the labor per hour for someone to rebuild a starter you're already at if not beyond the cost for a new one.

Do you have any place near you the specifically rebuilds starters and alternators?
I had one for my garden tractor done and it was reasonable. I think it depends on the place. If thats all they do, you're better off. I know Shorty (I think) had one done near him and was very happy. He posted it on our resource page.

When I changed my steering on the 67 from Becket to a new set up, I had to change the helm  but I know you dont have stuff THAT old. Personally, I like a newer smaller wheel but if you are a "purist" its not original. Rich's looks way nicer with the new stuff (so does mine) if you ask me.

I've bought these starters, works fine, good price, and 9 pounds lighter than original, one has been on my boat 3 years. Get the one for the 153 tooth flywheel

Red - I was told that, like my distributor, I need to have a marine starter as its sealed against spark?  So I've been hesitant to put in an auto one.  (I have 2 of those that are good, from the PO's bucket-o-bonus parts.  I figure since this sits so low in the compartment, that's where the fuel vapors would potentially collect & the most danger for explosion lies.

The high torque starters are completely sealed .. most all the adds include marine use.  some of the OEM automotive starters have little split / hole / drain ?  that are certainly not for marine use, for the reasons you stated, but if the starter is completely sealed, there is no risk of internal spark ... on All starters, a corroded, dirty, or loose connection of the battery cable is the most important thing to pay attention to for a spark risk.  You can paint the starter with epoxy appliance paint to reduce corrosion.

So Red - that's the starter I need for my 898?  (It doesn't specifically list the 305...)

The shop I referred to was a shop that all they do is rebuild starters & alternators....so I think new is the way to go.

The 305 starter is an identical starter to the other small blocks, and Yes .. a new starter is the best way to go, but be sure the flywheel is 153 tooth, most all of the marine motors have that small flywheel.

I'm kind of thinking I need this one now as that long threaded bolt out of the back allows my power steering cooler support bracket to mount there, like my old starter has.  I'd like to use the one we identified last night though...its cheaper and has more torque to turn the engine over.

But, I'm thinking I have to use this one?

That little long bolt sticking out the back is suposed to have a bracket on it bolted to the block to help hold the back end of that starter, it's a high torque also, and it weighs about 20 pounds.  I will work just fine on your boat motor.
