REALLY!
« on: January 21, 2011, 09:52:09 PM »
So I get an email from HyperAcme for another reason than this but I must comment on one his statements.
I told him to stay "Warm my friend" and he stated that,   It has  "warmed" up from -18 to -2, is that not crazy uncomfortable I mean  -2 degrees. How fun can that be?
In my state we are not always the warmest but we do have a good climate of warmer weather, roughly 9 months. Not to compare with Doug in FL.
Hats off to you guys that live in this  environment it has to be loyalty or just the love of cold.
I can see why there is such a big following of boat re-storeres in the north....time on your hands.
Not a bad thing, us in the south enjoy your enthusiasum so keep it up.

It was -46 this morning in International Falls. (about 300 miles North) The good news is there isn't much wind.

I was thinking about going riding today but not sure I feel like getting all bundled up. Suppose to be cold again tonight (-15,-20) and I am sure into tomorrow.
My digital thermometer maxes out at -21.8 and yesterday morning it was maxed out. When I pulled out of my garage, my car thermometer said +24 and it quickly plunged. It went down to -35 at one point but they say it wasnt that cold here so maybe there is some wind getting to it. Not sure where they mount those things in cars. Car rode pretty stiff!

Jason -  That was me about 15 years ago back when I still had hair! ;D It's addictive and fun. Boating is better though. Too bad we can't depend on a good winters like we've had this year. Many seasons where the only riding I did was up in the UP of Michigan because the snow in MN was so lousy.

Ross - I was supposed to be up at the cabin w/friend today doing some riding but that didn't work out. They run strong in this cold weather! I spent most of last weekend putting a chain case assembly in my new to me '04 700 Classic. A craigslist find that I got screwed on pretty good! :P  Hopefully it holds together for my trip to the Black Hills in February.

Kip
Is that a triple your riding? How did it run?
Your going to the Black hills to ride?
You are having to change the chain case ay? Bad gears? Chain? All of the above?

Ross my 700 Classic is a twin w/exhuast valves. Really wanted the 600 because it's a better motor. 700 is overkill for a short track trail machine anyways IMO. The motor runs great but after putting 50 miles on it I knew something wasn't right. Took the chaincase apart and found the bolt that holds the lower gear to the track drive shaft laying in the bottom of it, all chewed up. Amazed that it didn't grenade and leave me on the side of the trail. Chain was adjusted way too tight. Outer gear case cover was ruined and they had stripped a bolt on the inner gear case. I knew they were working on something down there because the exhaust(which has to be removed to access it) was missing some springs.  A real mess and whoever worked on it shouldn't have. They didn't use loc-tite which is why the bolt came out. Gears and chain seemed to be OK and intially I thought the drive shaft for the track was bad but the turned out to be fine.
Trailering out to the Black Hills for some riding w/two other guys. Never been there.

Thats what I planning on getting the next time if I ever do...a 600.
A buddy of mine had and XCSP 600 around an 02 I think with VES? Maybe that is what you have. Variable exhaust system? I think that is what they call it. Anyways he let me ride it for bit and I couldnt believe the throttle response compared to my 96 500. It sold me.

BTE when I asked about the triple, I meant the white XC in the picture. I've heard the triples were kinda troublesome but who knows.

Yep mine has the VES. I'd have bought a 500 Classic if they had built them w/domestic twin valve motor. But the years I was looking at had the Fuji 488 motor. A good motor but geez I had that 15 years ago in my '91 500. One of the reasons I like the "Classics"  is because they came from the factory w/FAST M10 suspension.

My 95 XCR was the 440. The 600 XCR was new for '95 and easily the most popular sled for Polaris that year. I rode my buddies 600 and it felt slower than my 440. No where near as responsive. Didn't handle as nicely either due to the extra weight over the skis.  I was glad to give it back to him! ;D  Funny how triples were all the rage until Polaris came out with their domestic twins in the late 90's..

The 600's didn't have any issues that I was aware of.  The 440's had issues with crankshafts not being heat treated properly. I was lucky enought to get one and have it fail the first night out while I was in Michigan with a bunch of other guys on 4 day trip. Going home wasn't an option. Had to pay $40 bucks to get the new crank flown into to Ontanagon, MI but get this. Dropped the sled off at the dealer on a  Thursday at noon, by 4:00 PM Friday I was putting it back on the trailer to haul back to Mass city MI where we were staying. Repairs were under warranty. Put a 140 miles on it that night and 280 miles the next day. Ran like a top till the day I sold it.
