1994 Johnson 120
« on: February 03, 2011, 06:24:50 PM »
Anybody here have any experience with a 120 hp Evinrude or Johnson from the early 90's?  A local seller has a 1994 model and after talking with him via email I've learned that he just bought it and says it's too much for his aluminum flat. Asking $800. Would consider offers.

I plan to go check it out on Sunday when the temps are a bit better than the 28 degrees right now. I'll bring my compression gauge and look it over really well. Needs paint work so I'll offer him $700 if it checks out OK.

Hmmmm.  Browned or discolored paint may indicate it once overheated, use caution. 120 too big?  What is a flat, you mean jon boat?

Being a '94 it's probly a looper. That's not necessarily a bad thing but they're heavier, and some say less reliable, than the crossflow block. Though they do have a much better trim system I'll admit.

Price sounds fair enough to me. But just like any potential motor purchase. 'Member to bring yer compression tester along.

Good luck!

Paint is just dull and worn off the lower unit. A flat is basically a jon boat. There are a few aluminum boat builders here and the hulls are almost totally flat for 2/3's of the length. Very shallow running boats. Raise the motor and you can get in to areas of the marsh to fish that are only a couple of feet deep.

I'll check it out for fun and keep an eye out for others.

I have to tell you I replaced my 140 with a newer 115, the 115 is a great motor but the 140 was way better.  If I  were to do it again I would hold out for the 140...

The 110 cubic inch OMC 120 would be my first choice for a CVX-16. My brother bought a '92 CSS-16 with a 120 Johnson new and it still runs perfect, never needing any repairs. Another brother has a 1986 Evinrude 140, also the 110 cubic inch, on his CVX-17 and it still runs perfect. They have been great motors for my family. $800 sounds like a great deal to me.

I would definitely go take a look at it. Besides compression make sure you check the gearcase lube & trim fluid levels too. Other than that there's not much to a two stroke. Either they work or they dont.

I agree the V4 OMCs are extremely durable. Had several in the family. I routinely beat the snot outa this 90. I'm talking in excess of 6000rpm. And she's never so much as asked for a kleenex. Imo the 140 is pound for pound the best V4 you can(could?) buy.

One popped up on Clist down here a couple weeks ago. "New top end, Bobs nosecone & low water pickup. $800 OBO." POOF! Gone before I could write the # down. Never seen an ad disappear so quick!?

Oh well, when looking at a motor just check everything you can think of. Then go with your gut.
