Progress is looking good, but that is a huge hole in the transum for a mercrusier mated up to a 305.

Any plans on installing a new transum?  You need to do something. Now is the time.

It's already getting a new transom(might be hard to see but I already gutted what was left of the old one) so I'll just have to do a little glass work to modify it for a mercruiser, or get one of those adapter kits jerry and rich mentioned.

Not sure how you are supporting the hull, but it wounds like it is pretty important to keep the hull well supported before glassing in the floor to make sure it does not "bow out" or else the top half won't fit.

Those adapters are expensive. I would just put in all new wood then cut the hole for the outdrive later on. I would think you could just put new gelcoat over the wood on the outside to cover the difference.

Yes, the hull does bow out but it's towards the top...I already pulled it together with straps and there was no change down where the floor is.  I'm not sure gel coat will make up the difference there will be at least 1/4" gap from the wood.

I would taper out the area of the old drive as long as possible.  Then start with layers of cloth (will be many layers) to build up that area.  Then sand smooth and gel coat the whole area sand and sand some more buff out will look good as new. Then you will have to determine where the mercrusier is going and cut a new hole with a template.  I sure Rich will chime in here as he has done it.

Well, I only went from 60's Mercruiser old style to 80's Mercruiser Alpha, not from Volvo. So I didn't have to rebuild the fiberglass, only made the hole larger after rebuilding the wood on the inside. We did have a customer at the shop once who converted his boat from OMC stringer drive to Mercruiser with our help but he did most of the fiberglass work. We cut the hole, mounted the transom assembly and installed the engine.

Old hole:

RE: wiliermdb
Do you have a link to it ?

No link to provide. I went to a local counter top company that has a large inventory of Formica on hand in hundreds of colors. This place supplies most of the market around here for shops and home repair companies.

Look in the yellow pages for your town and see who sells Formica and they can (should) tell you who they are supplied by.

This picture shows the original Formica dash panel and the new one I cut. I like it because it won't cut and you don't have to staple it a thousand times. Glue it on with contact cement or a good 3M interior spray, trim with a router and a laminate bit and you're done.

CV19 on the CGOA site said he would post dimensions for the CV19 seats, which look pretty darn close to CV16 seats.

If I were going to fit that transom for a Mercruiser drive, I'd cut the vo hole out bigger, a rectangle with right angles, lay up a fiberglass plug exactly the same size, same thickness of the hull, fit the plug in the transom and glass it in, over-lay it inside with 24oz woven roven mat, then build in the transom over it.  That plug Must be absolutely FLAT, it's a lot easier to get it flat on a table, rather than on the boat. The mercruiser transom mount don't allow you much tolerance to assure a good seal.

I use a chopped strand and resin mix to bond the wood together, and the bond to the hull, 2" total thickness.  Get a template to cut the drive and bolt holes, the bottom of the cut-out should be (my opinion) 7" from the bottom of the hull, mine is set-up @ 9" from the bottom.   I use a 2" oak block that I drilled with a drill press, same size bit, as a guide to drill the bolt holes strait thru the transom.  Like Jeff said, taper the glass on the out-side of the transom glass, fill that line in with the chopped strand mix, or stranded filler.

The CV-19 is about 10" wider than the CV-16, wider floor, the seat frames from the CV-19 may not fit the CV-16 hull, I'd check that out.

Thanks red, I already have plans to do something similar and I have a plug piece...I might just cut it larger like you did.

Been looking at pictures of both CV's and the pass thru between the seats on the CV16 is pretty tight, where the CV19 has alot of room.
They sure look like the same seats/bases ... BUT ... Maybe not ... GT150 seats are smaller ...

There might be a Carlson sacrifice soon .....
I've given sacrificing Glastrons'n Carlsons a great deal of thought. Reached the conclusion that culling the herd occasionally is probably best for the breed. Have a crazy pipe dream that the less of them remaining well make ours worth more ...?

Anyway before performing the sacrifice, to appease the gods, I recommend a moment of silence be observed. Then mebbe a few kind words. Followed perhaps by annointing the hull with some bubbly?
