GT-150 Project Update
« on: March 18, 2012, 07:16:01 PM »
The sanding and fairing are as good as I can get them on the hull, waiting for the pollen to calm down a little before painting begins.  The pollen count was almost 4000 ppm today, supposed to peak this week.
On a positive note, the Evinrude 115 is ready to bolt on.  I know it's not a "true restoration", but I like to add my own personal touches.   ;D

Looks great Mark. The motor cleaned up really nice. If you need any tips on mounting an outboard motor to a transom, I am the in house expert. LOL.

Mark, if I may ask, what is the make and model of the propeller, and the pitch?

Gregg, I hear ya!  Unfortunately, my OCD doesn't allow that thought process.  LOL  It won't be perfect, but I gotta give it my best shot.  I won't even launch the Starflite in my home lake right now, it's 8' low for dam repairs and too many "hidden obstructions" that normally wouldn't be an issue.

David, That's a 19P x 13" Solas Amita 3 blade I bought for the Johnson 115 on the Starflite over a year ago.  (I put the 19P Volvo 4 blade back on the Starflite, less torque steer on the tired steering system and top end was only 1 mph difference!)  I have a 21P x 12.5" OMC factory alum. (NIB Ebay special) ready to try as well, I don't think the 19P is going to be enough?

It's a long way from perfect, but not too bad for my first attempt I guess.......

Ya, lookin' good Mark! If I were you I'd run a bead of caulk under the rubrail whilst ya got the boat upside down. Another along the top after ya flip her over?

Carry on.

Nice tip, Doug ... it's a lot easier to make it look nice when you have easy access ... a bit clumsy trying to get the bottom of the rub rail when she's right side up.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the kind words.  My wife thinks I'm a perfectionist, (only when it comes to my Glastrons), I assured her this was definitely an amateur job!  It'll have to do for now, guess you're right Gregg nobody will ever see it (much) hopefully.

There's a bead of caulk and polyurethane foam tape between the halves, and a bead of caulk under the rubrail down the line of screw holes, but I like your idea Doug, thanks.   ;)

If you ride that GT the way it's meant to be ridden, plenty of that hull should be out of the water :-)

Sounds like ya got it covered Mark. But a 'lil extra protection never hurts. Tryin' to remember the name of the stuff we used to seal aluminum to fiberglass way back when I was building carny trailers. Believe it came in a red squeeze tube with kinda gold'n black graphics, caulk itself was silvery/gray? Beauty of the stuff was you could lay down an extremely thin bead & so long as the surfaces were clean'n ya gave the goo enough time to cure, it worked purty dang good. If'n I can find some I'm thinkin' of runnin' a bead or two on the Baja. Though I don't think she's leaking through the seam anywhere.

GT looks great buddy! Keep up the good work.

Mark, what paint did you use for the outboard?  Did you sandblast the old paint off?

Thanks again gang, I sincerely appreciate the encouragement and advise.  As many of you know, it's a long uphill battle on these projects - but it sure helps to have a great advisement team behind ya!

Sean, I sanded the hood (motor cover) down to bare fiberglass, did a few repairs, and shot it with three coats of enamel followed by three coats of clear enamel (after applying the new graphics).  The mid and lower sections were de-greased and scrubbed, sanded (lightly) and primed with zinc-chromate, and shot with three coats of bright gold lacquer followed by three coats of clear lacquer.

Lacquer? Nobody's shot lacquer for the last 20 years. Is there a reason?

The diesel pump rebuild shop where I work uses a brand called "Orr-Lac".  It's industrial strength stuff that stands up well to abusive environments, (heat, fuel, oil, etc. mounted on the side of a motor), and I could buy it at cost.  We'll see how well it holds up on an outboard!?

I originally bought it to paint the Johnson lower unit to match (?) the color on my Starflite.  Seemed like it would also be more "compatible" on the Red and White GT than the blue/green on the E'rude.  Being "a little different" works for me Jerry, what can I tell ya?   ;D
