It's ours!
« on: August 11, 2012, 10:31:30 PM »
Sorry to have not repsonded to other topics about this; wasn't trying to leave anyone hanging, just putting on the ol' poker face before looking at it.  We settled on a price that I think was fair; the boat is rock solid as advertised, and we couldn't have picked a better one in my opinion.  It's the nicest all-original Glastron I've seen to be honest, and I can't wait to bring it to Red Wing; not perfect, but great overall condition.  Thank you all so much for your knowledge and assistance that made this purchase possible, I can't say enough about the graciousness of this group.

We got to Brainard about noon, and visually checked out the boat for structual integrity and condition.  The rear light didn't work, so we checked the fuses and replaced the guilty culprit; worked fine after that.  We proceeded to ask to take the boat out from the garage and get it fired up. The owner stated that he didn't want to de-winterize it only to have us walk away, so we agreed to buy it on the condition that it would run as he said it would, and if it didn't, we could have our money back.  Removed the back seat (and side pads and engine cover for you guys who have 18's), and removed the plugs to spray fogging fluid down each cylinder.  Broke one of the plugs trying to remove it (of course), and were sent to ACE hardware to find a replacement.  ACE doesn't have them, but Hanson's Marine ~10 miles up the road will have them.  Hanson's Marine doesn't have them, but he calls Bay Lake Marina and they have them ~25 miles up the road.  Finally get the plugs at Bay Lake Marina, and head back to Brainard and manually crank the engine 4-5 revolutions with a socket to get the oil moving around the cylinders.  New plugs are in, won't crank - positive battery terminal is bad.  Go back to ACE for a battery terminal at 4:03, ACE closes at 4.  The guy closing the shop won't let me in for a quick purchase.  Luckily, Holiday in Garrison, MN has terminals, so I bring one back from there.  Get the motor fired up but it dies after one revolution (think 2 year old gas).  Try to crank again, nothing, solenoid is clicking but not moving the starter.  Rap on the starter with a tacking hammer lightly and it starts cranking over, fires up after a little fresh gas down the carb throat.  Finally get to hear the aggressive grunt of a 228hp V8.  In Love.

So we're going to replace the starter solenoid and thermostat assembly; can we bring those items to Red Wing and get some help from the experts?  I don't know MerCruisers so well, and if someone who knows what they're doing can help us it would really be appreciated.  Overall I'd rate the boat as an 8/10, and that's exactly what we've been looking for.  All the neighbors stopped over throughout the day asking "Why are you selling the fastest boat on the Lake?!".  It will need a clear coat this winter, but that shouldn't be a problem.  I'll post pictures as soon as it's light out, got home too late to do it tonight. We also need help with a name for this thing, and we'll have to have a proper re-namming cerimony at the meet.  Thanks again everyone, see you in Red Wing!

It's not perfect, definitley has those "oh, up close I can see the problem" issues, but we've looked at a lot of 18's and for having an original coat of paint and interior, this thing was well taken care of over its 32 year lifespan.  Plus we have a new 21" Mercury Avenger SS prop to test at the meet, so we'll certainly be looking for anything that performs better!

Awesome, we'll be looking for minimal prop slip to pull skiiers out of the hole more than anything.  Doran - are you sure about not wanting those rims Shawn has?  I plan to put those on tomrrow if that's the case; if not, the tires on this trailer are immaculate so you're not putting me out if you want Shawn's/yours..

The rims are yours.

I am potentially swapping trailers with another member over the weekend and I'm good with what I have.

I've been told that the Gil Six Gun (6 Blades) is a great digger prop, but you do lose a little top end.  You're welcome to try it.  I haven't even tried it yet.

I need to focus on one thing at a time.

Alright, thanks! I'll now have 2 perfect (more than 1 1/2" tread car tires) spares.  I can use them both, but if someone wants one I'll be the mood to barter for something we might want..

Is the impeller new in your new to you boat? If not, don't start it again and buy a new one. I'm sure somebody will help put it in for you in Red Wing. I will do it if'n I make it up there this year.

It is not, I'll buy a new one before the meet.  The water pump (seals/impeller/assembly) was done ~6 years ago.  If anyone can help, it woule be greatly appreciated, as I said, I am still learning about MerCruisers.

If you are going to do the water pump buy 2 quarts of lower unit gear lube.  As when you change the impeller you have to drain the gear case also a good time to see if the seals are bad. I can also help been thru the process many times. Any questions get ahold of me.

Congrats on the purchase looking forward to Red Wing.

Congrats guys! 8)

The add posted by the previous owner said it was a 302, but I didn't catch on that it had a 228, which is the GM 305 w/4bbl. Plus I believe the Ford engine was only used in the 77 & 78 model years and yours is an '80.

That said I think you'll want a 19P for watersports. I run a SS High Five 19P. My '79 CVX18 has the same motor as yours and it will over-rev with that prop but hole shot is excellent.

You can try a 23P, but I found that the 305 just doesn't have the torque to turn it. Really need a 5.7 back there to spin a 23P prop. A 21P Laser II gave me pretty much the same top speed as a 23P Laser II but WOT engine RPMs were 4300-4400. Right where they should be. With a 23P Laser II and my 22P Enertia I can only turn 4000-4100 RPMS lightly loaded. And hole shot is poor.

Your 21P SS Avenger should work well on your boat but you may want to pitch down for water sports. I've also found that props with raked blades work better in that the boat has less of a tendancy to porpoise. Expect somewhere around 56-57 MPH with that 21P Avenger.

Lastly I'd be surpised if you boat needs a new clear coat. Mine was really harsh. To the point that I almost didn't buy it. But with a little wet sanding and buffing it came back beautifully. I suspect that it all yours needs. Shaun(Grinder) got the same results with his boat which is identical to yours.

Concerning gel-cote.

Here's what the back of the boat looked like when I got it:

Here it is at the meet last year:

Water pump is brand new.  It was installed 2-3 years ago.  The boat has not been used much since it was installed.  Enjoy your new boat  ;D

We've got an issue.  When running it on the muffs in the driveway, we've noticed the thermostat isn't going up, and the drivers side manifold is getting hotter than the passenger side.  We plan to replace the thermostat, anyone have any ideas on why one manifold is getting hotter?
