He must be the world's expert on how to navigate in rough waters. Let's buy him a Glastron Challanger flat bottom boat and see if he can keep up with us on a choppy day on the St. Croix.

LOL Gregg!  The more free info is provided the more tempting it is to find a way to extract more  :)  Thanks for the detailed explanation.

OK ... Now I have a question ...

My 1989 Mariner 115 HP motor has two vent holes in top of gear case and one at the bottom.
Why do I have to put gear grease in from the bottom ?

You fill from the bottom so the gearcase fills with fluid in a level manner, pushing air out through the top vent plug as the level rises. If you try to fill from the top you'll end up with air pockets down below where oil will not travel.

(I believe) The forward screw on top isn't a vent plug/hole Gregg, it's to put grease on the reverse cam (shift) linkage.  I'm a little rusty on my Merc stuff, maybe Rich or somebody can verify?

Of the two plugs at the top of that gearcase I think one is marked "vent" and the other is marked "oil level". I don't know why during those particular years they decided they needed two upper plugs when just one is sufficient. I suppose they intended to have both open when filling the gearcase but only fill it until the oil comes out of the one marked "oil level". The plug positioned in the center of the gearcase opens into the chamber just below the water pump, above the drive shaft bearing cage to ensure gear oil flows through the bearing before exiting the plug, the other at the front of the gearcase opens into the shift rod cavity. Perhaps they do intend they both be open when filling to make sure the level of oil fills both sections.

Merc owners manual says ...
Remove both vent plugs (top two) , Remove bottom plug (let old grease drain) , Fill from bottom drain until grease comes out first vent hole (one to the rear) put plug in, continue filling until excess come out other vent hole,  Replace other plug.
Drain one ounce out and replace lower plug.

Just wondering because trapped air from the top is the same as trapped air from the bottom ... Isn't it ?
Just wanna start a fight ... LOL

If you have air trapped under the oil you will not get the proper lubrication to all points needed. And once that air works to the surface your oil level will be incorrect.

Gregg, did you really cut off a cross section of your lower unit to find the answer?

Would not air be trapped no matter what ?

Must not be,  but just asking because I don't wanna go out in the cold garage and cut/grind wood/fiberglass ... LOL

Dave ...
Just picked up a multi tool from HF and wanted to test it out ... Works GREAT !

Gregg, get off the computer and back out into that cold garage and work on your boat.
