Need help, have beer.
« on: June 20, 2013, 09:40:27 PM »
Who knows how to hook up a mercruiser? Not me! I got the engine bolted in and the outdrive bolted on and now I am so lost. If anybody would like to go to big lake anytime soon or have me tow my rig somewhere please let me know. If I had the slightest clue what I was doing it would probably only take an hour. I guess that's what I get for sticking to outboards. Would this weekend or next weekend work for anyone?

You got the motor aligned before mounting the outdrive?

What do you mean hook up? the drive, the wiring, the exhaust I have the 18 and the other boat I just bought you can look at if that would help. Other wise I could help in a few weeks but am busy the next 2 weeks
I think this has become an addiction.

Jason, I raised the front end up a bit so the drive shaft would go in...is that what you mean?

You need to do what you did but it needs to be smoother than just go in. You need to use an alignment bar. What else do you need to hook up?

When you "DO" have you Mercruiser engine aligned right.

Throttle/shifter cables, a wire or two. The exhaust and water hoses I remember pretty well.

What boat is this?
What year motor?
Is this Kips donor boat with his old 305?
Think we could walk you through with pictures? I don't think I can get over there any time soon.... You are welcome to borrow my alignment tool though. The other S.P. has it right now.

I did Goldie all by myself, never having done anything more mechanical than changing out an alternator one time on a car, and changing my own oil.

Rich and I had a few phone calls and some other members advice, I can't remember all of them, but I read a ton online and scoured picture after picture to see where everything went.

It is critical that the outdrive be aligned 100%...just getting the outdrive to go in isn't good enough, you'll need the alignment tool.  I ended up just buying one as I figure I'll need it again when I have to do another gimbal bearing.

You can do it!

Shaun here is a picture showing the routing of the throttle and shift cables. I agree with Jason that with pictures should be able to figure out what goes where. Call me if you need anything.

Thanks everyone, I'll see if pictures will get the job done. Kip, that picture is more helpful than anything I've found on the web yet.  Joe, if you do decide you can stop by the boat is in my fil's shop in zimmerman, not my house.

It looks like I am going to be heading to Zimmerman tomorrow, if I can connect with Shawn and pick up the alignment tool I will bring it up, if you still need it.

Proud to say it's about 95% complete thanks in large part to Joe b. I hooked up the hoses after he left and now I just need to hook up the trim pump and fuel lines. Might as well add some pictures of the behemoth.

Good to hear Sean. Kind of glad you you decided to drop the 305 in that boat, would have been kind of a shame to junk it considering the shape it is in.

And it is a good thing we got everything out of my big garage up north when we did as the cabin sold last weekend I'll need to have everything moved out by the end of July.  :o
