SOLD - Restored 1979 CVZ-18 for sale
« on: December 11, 2013, 10:11:03 AM »
I was partner in a wood boat restoration shop that took this CVZ-18 in trade on a major wood boat project.  It was in rough shape cosmeticly but mechanicly was in very good condition.  The owner bought it new and used it on a small private lake in northern Ohio.  We removed the engine and outdrive, flipped the boat and repaired any gelcoat blisters and also fixed scratches in the hull and topsides.  Base and clear coat was applied for a beautiful finish.  The Mercruiser 898, 305 Chev, 198 HP engine was tuned with a carb rebuild, the outdrive was aligned, a new water pump impellor and housing was installed along with Mercruiser high performance gear lube.  The boat has been run for about 5 hours since the restoration and runs smooth at all speeds, even at a thrilling 45 mph with 4 people on board.  The boat tows great on a modified 2008 trailer with brakes and folding tongue.  It has a fair condition full mooring cover, stainless prop, new battery, and all accessories function.  A completely turnkey, ready to run classic.  Priced at $11,900 (Will consider a 500 mile delivery free from Akron Ohio) OPEN TO REASONABLE OFFERS AND WILL CONSIDER A RESTORABLE TRADE.  It took a long time but I located and installed a set of new windshields because the originals had some crazing.  BOAT HAS BEEN SOLD  JULY 7, 2014

Where are you located and do you still do wood boat work?

I'm restoring a 62 Owens Flagship, and have had very little luck finding any guidance on the project.

Hello, I still do my own wood restorations but no longer work for customers.  Cruisers can be very time consuming and expensive to restore and I hope you can do the work yourself.  There are a number of wood boat restorers in Minnesota.  If you want to contact them let me know your location and I can check a list of restorers in your area.  Gil

Just an FYI and not trying to insult anyone here but this boat is or was at a dealer in Akron Ohio. I had sent a marine surveyor to check it out and he was not impressed. It looks great in the pic,s but be wary.

Hi Chippy,

I actually called last week on that CVZ to ask for more information about it.  My wife and I have been in the market for a late 70s CVZ of 17-18' SSV.  Thank you for being willing to post despite the awkward topic.  We live in Minnesota and wouldn't have had any way to get feedback about it without sending our own surveyor out.  If you don't mind sharing, what was it that your surveyor was unimpressed with?  The thing that worried me when I saw the recent listing was what condition the floor/stringers/gas tank are in.  As you say, everything looks really pretty in the pictures!

Sorry for late response. I was told the transom was rotten and the paint over the bottom of the boat was bubbling. floor all soft. fuel tank filthy never took out. needed full structural rebuild. Polyurethane on hull. leg would not trim all the way down.

there was a couple more things but you get the idea.

good luck

Just curious, this thread is like 4 years old.   I thought this craft was sold back in 2013 sometime.

It's for sale again.  Just search for cvz ohio in google and it should be the first link that shows up.

That's pretty much the laundry list of things I was worried about.  You helped us dodge a bullet.  Thank you very much!

If you read the guys original post they didn't touch any of the wood structure when they refurbished the boat. The big carpeted patch under the passengers seat is a dead give away that the boat has rot.

I remember that boat because they did such a nice job putting a new interior in it but for some reason ran the backs of the rear seat past the deck at the stern. Not only is it not functional but it looks terrible.
