1959 Evinrude help!
« on: July 22, 2014, 01:52:58 PM »
Hey guys hope everyone's summer is going great. We've been out with the classics almost every weekend and it's been great!

On to the issue. Coming back on Sunday the old girl stopped pumping appreciable amounts of water. So even tho I was told when I bought it the water pump was new I got one anyways.

Pump went in fine, some scoring of pump housing and plate for sure but it looks ok to me. Let the sealant dry over night n fired her up this morning. Nada, bone dry.

So I pulled the thermostat cover off n the thermostat looked pretty nasty and maybe even bent or warped?  So I have all of that on order as well.

Now my question, can I run this engine with out a thermostat? Reason I ask is with the cover off the motor will shoot water 6 feet out of the t Stat hole so I have to assume my pump is working. However when I put the cover back on it will pump for a minute and then trickle off to nothing. Pull the cover back off n no water!?! Takes another 30 seconds n starts shooting again.

So.... what the heck? I can run a hose thru all three holes n get water out of the leg or exhaust so I'm pretty sure they aren't plugged. What am I missing???

Pics cuz everybody likes pictures.

Ps I'm off work all work so anybody local to west st paul want to earn some free beer n pizza to lend a hand...

I just can't figure out how ever with no termostat I can't get water out the exhaust.

Jerry you'll have to forgive me. Those are all post '58 motors?
They will shoot water out the thermostat area with cover off?

could the brass sleeve in the impeller be slipping under pressure? I have heard the rubber does not bond well to the bronze. So put in a new impeller if you have not already.

I was also told that running an outboard motor without a thermostat can cause it to run too cold.

Well I think I got it figured out... seems I'm a idiot. Well I'm sure a lot of people knew that but just to answer my own question...

It is very important darn near the whole leg is under water on the old OMC's.  Our '61 Skiflite you all helped us with is a tall or long transom. This here '58 I got is a shorty...

So long story short my test tank wasn't deep enough to provide the water pressure to really pump it out. Raised my tank up on some blocks n bam she pumps like new...again

See you all on the river!! We usually go in at 494 or lions levvee. Look for the baby blue 'tron and brown and white Sport Lido!

Good to see you got it figured out. Very frustrating when everything seems to check out fine and you still have issues.

Kinda sorta. Still fighting the old girl. Pumps great in a deep tank. Pumps great floating at the dock. Looses prime or something once I'm underway. Thinking once again I'm going to have to pull the leg and stare. As soon as I go WOT I loose all water out of the exhaust. Our other near identical motor pumps gallons in same circumstances so something still isn't right. So I'm close. Really want to get these old girls reliable n tow em down to Redwing for the day.
