Iowa Meet 2016
« on: October 15, 2015, 02:57:41 PM »
The MN group meeting dates have been set, but not too much has been discussed about the spring opener typically held at Rathbun lake in south central Iowa.   Rathbun 2015 was essentially a rain out, in three days time, we were able to boat about 4-5 hours.   We have had good weather in the past, but the spring is always a volatile weather mix for the Midwest.  We did talk to the Marina owners at Rathbun and they are willing to provide slips and camping areas, an idea more in line with the TI/MN meet. Do we want a venue change? or do we want to move the date?  maybe a mix of both?  I've always liked Rathbun, but I'm open to other venues, maybe Okoboji, Spirit lake, or maybe Lewis & Clark on the Missouri at Yankton.    My thought is maybe a few more folks from MN may wish to join us there since it would be closer for them.  Obviously a long ways off, but if we opt to take up the Rathbun Marina's offer, we should contact them and start solidifying some dates.   Some of the locals will be gathering October 24th for an end of season run meeting at lake Manawa Iowa, so the subject of the spring meet will likely be discussed.   Let me know what everyone wants to do.   Thanks, Plugcheck(Michael)

I'm up for whatever.  Omaha is just as close for me...so I'm personally happy to head West too.  Rathbun is nice and quiet with room to open the boats up, but is generally a haul for everyone.

Whatever works guys!

Sorry to say amber and I probably will not be at the Iowa get together in 2016. We will be heading to Oklahoma City for a week towards the end of June. But we do plan on checking out some places along the Missouri river next year for options.

Here is the latest response from the Lake Rathbun Marina regarding a possible Classic Glastron Meet this coming summer of 2016.   Just trying to figure out if there is any interest, dates can be flexible, was thinking later in June of maybe even July but first need to decide if there is any interest in taking up the Marina idea.   Below is the response from the Lake Rathbun Marina folks.

Jannell Sowers <jannell@rathbunlakemarinas.com>

Michael,
I am so so Sorry that I have not gotten back to you sooner.  I didn't have
answers to your question, but Now I do.

We have just built more campgrounds at the marina. We will have 10
campsite that will be available to the general public to rent this summer.
They will have 50amp power at each site. Water will be shared between 2 or
3 sites.  All sites will have a fire ring and picnic table. You are very
welcome to tent camp at these sites. Prices for camping is $25.00 a night
per site. We will have a showerhouse/bathrooms available too.

We do have boat slips available to rent daily, prices range from $20.00 a
night up to $50.00 a night, depending on size of slip, covered or
uncovered and if you need water and electric. Doubling up in slips is not
a problem, we just ask that each boat be registered at the office and pay
 the slip fee.

We have a Fuel dock, Store, and Restaurant here at the marina.

We would Welcome you to stay with us any time.

If you have any more question please let me know. The best way to contact
me is my cell phone (641-436-6587).

I may have stated this earlier, but Lake Rathbun is really the only open big water for us flatlanders.   Having looked at Okoboji, the outing is possible, but it appears that nearly inch of shore is owned by someone and getting camping close is tough since many are RV sites with year to year leases.  Next idea was Yankton, Lewis and Clark Lake, on the Missouri River, camping is available, and its a sizable lake, been there many times, decent place all in all.   Reservations are filling in quickly.   They do have a Marina, but last time we camped there it was a short drive over to the Marina.

Any interest folks?   We need to establish a date and place fairly soon if we are going to have an early meet.  Thanks all, Michael.

we really have enjoyed going to the early meets rathbun in the past, and will be vary open to going wherever this year. would be open to the marina over the park if that is what everyone else is doing.
in spite of running from weather the first 2 years, and getting rained out last year, i like rathbun.

The marina sounds like a good area to move too. Honestly, Amber and I have enjoyed the time we spent at Rathbun. It is a great lake with little traffic with a lot of room to run!

Mike, I would say pick some dates and go for it!

July 8-10 should work for us, hopefully the weather will be more cooperative if we pushed the event later in the season.  Any other suggestions?

After much wrestling with various schedules, meetings, and discussions, a basic plan for Rathbun 2016 has evolved.   The Glastron meet will be held Thursday July 7th through Sunday morning July 10th.   We plan to camp and have a slip at the lake Rathbun marina that many of you are aware of from previous meets there.   They are building new camping areas, and we plan to camp there.  1 RV per spot, but two tents can also be placed upon one campsite also. Supposed to have fire pit, 50A service, and new restroom/shower facilities.   Camping is a short walk from the slips, I was told about 1/4 mile.   All this is new to me, but nothing ventured, then nothing gained is what I believe.   Janell also stated that her reservations list will not open until March, so plenty of time to consider coming out.   We are hoping that by moving to a later date, we may avoid some of the early spring weather.   There are plenty of other camping and hotels around including the Honey Creek Resort and State owned parks.  My basic to-do list while at Rathbun includes a Friday lunch at Honey Creek Resort, and Saturday on the beach.   We now have another restaurant to peruse, Louie's on the Lake is located at the Marina, might be worth a look,  We plan to arrive sometime Thursday around lunchtime, get set up, put boat in, etc  Spend the evening on the water, maybe cook out on the beach in one of the coves.   The website is www.lakerathbunmarinas.com  This is the basics that I know of right now, hopefully we can have nice weather and a decent turn out.    Thanks all, Plugcheck

I'm 10 miles away, Rathbun is a Corps lake, so there's no Lakefront property unfortunately.  I was just down yesterday (55 and Sunny) clearing some more of the lot.  I should have the camper up and ready by then as well.

I'll try to get pictures of the campground.

Mike - Do you know which Marina we'd be at?  Buck Creek or South Fork?

(edit:  Sounds like Buck Creek from your description.)

According to Janell, they are all wrapped up and managed/named as one entity now.   No specifics yet on campground or actual slips.   In discussions with her, I stated most of our boats are in the 16-23' range, and open slips are acceptable.  She also stated that the campground was new and currently under construction, the newsletter on their website has a hand drawn map of the area showing the camping areas to be dispersed amongst the trees.  My only experience at their locations has been for fuel and supplies over the last several years meets at Rathbun.   Any info you can provide, scouting, or otherwise will help.   In a nutshell, I simply picked dates, Tim and I + families plan to go.   Just like TI, we went and found it to be a very pleasant experience, hoping that this may work out in similar fashion minus of course a casino.  Our first year at Rathbun was quite windy, making the open water rough, but back by the Marina, Dam beach, and coves was calm, so if we have wind this year, we have plenty to enjoy without crossing open water.   Personally, I like the adventure of it all, worse case, I can still get a camp spot near our old digs.
