67 V174 project
« on: November 06, 2016, 08:33:19 PM »
Since funds are very tight, I was unable to get the transom completed on the CVX 23 this year but I need something to work on so I pulled the 67 V174 into the shop. First time its been inside in the 3 years I have owned it.
Wow, very rotten floor and stringers. I was able to remove much of the floor by hand, no tools required.
I also pulled the motor, transom assembly, gimble assy, main wire harness and control cables. The remaining wiring is a total redo.
Luckily, the transom doesnt seem too rotten. I am hoping I can by with it the way it is or maybe replacing just a portion, like Rich did.
At this point, I do not know how far I will go with it this fall and winter.
When I was crawling around under the trailer trying to get it adjusted better I noticed a crack along one of the strakes. I am sure it is due to the rotten stringers and crappy metal bunks. The trailer will need a lot of love too.

More rot
This thing does not have a lot going for it. The gel is bad, floor, stringers, interior, hull. Oh well
This one is going to be fun though. There wont be much that is original when done. 305 V8 will be replacing the 120 4 banger, non correct paint or gel, modified interior etc
I think I will be trying my hand at shooting flake. Great one to experiment on.

That is going to be quite the winter project. It'll really move along with a V8 engine, provided you can make it fit in there without much modification. My boat is plenty fast with a high power 4 cylinder.

Agreed. I would have been happy with the 120 but I can see welding on the block and I am sure the chumley I got it from didnt winterize it. It will become parts for the 120 in my 67 V164
The 305 very well could be dead too. We'll see. No hurry.
Rich
What does your spare parts collection for this boat look like? I dont need a lot since most if it will be replaced but a couple of parts that I do need are"
Knob and bolt for flip up windscreen panel. Have one, need two.
Cast aluminum part where the rub rail meets transom.
I noticed long ago that you replaced your steering wheel. Did it fit on the original tapered shaft? Or did you change the entire helm, cable etc?
This wheel is exactly like the one on the 67 V164 and I broke that trying to pull it.

I have a spare windshield but I'm not certain the arms and knobs are with it. Also not certain I want to part with them either. Same for the transom end caps.

My replacement steering wheel fit the original helm, no mods. I still have the original white steering wheel too. I don't think I'll ever use the wheel again and would be willing to let it go.

Your wheel is in much better shape than mine but I may use something smaller.

I came to the conclusion yesterday that this one is going to get split. The floor is rotten all the way to the front as well as the main stringer. Besides, the tank will need to be "restored" and I dont think it can come out any other way.
The transom is in much better condition then I thought it would be, based on how neglected the rest of the boat is. I may not have to replace it. That leads me to a question. Is there any kind of cross reference as to what gimble/transom assemblies key hole are interchangeable? I dont really even know how to identify what I have other than one is a 67 and the other a 77
Also I'd be interested in seeing what others have built to support a hull off the trailer. Ideally, I would like to build one that I can adjust to different size hulls without having to rebuild the entire thing. Being there are no stringers to speak of, it needs to come off the trailer and onto something with a lot more support.

When I rebuilt mine I recut the hole in the transom for an Alpha assembly which will also work for pre-alpha gear 1973 and newer. Using a home-made template you line up the 4 lower bolt holes and the top of the key hole. I used half-inch dowel as alignment pins. The bottom of the key hole gets cut out and the 2 upper bolt holes will need to be filled and re-drilled about an inch higher.

When I was doing the stringers I lifted up the boat a few inches above the trailer using blocks under the chines and bottom edge of the transom. I used a carpenter's level at the stern of the boat and on the bow so they are level with each other to make sure there was no twist in the hull. The bottom of the hull hung free with no pressure from the trailer underneath.

I see but obviously you still had to get in and walk around to glass in the stringers etc.
I wonder if I could suspend it with straps but I suppose that would pull the sides in.

Boards positioned side-to-side acted as working platforms.
