Sailboat Turned Submarine
« on: August 31, 2017, 06:30:28 AM »
This happened yesterday, a 1957 38 foot wooden sailboat on a mooring behind the shop where I work . I actually watched it go down. I was working on a customer's boat on our dock when I just happened to look up to see the sailboat bow-high, stern in the water and it went completely under in about 10 seconds. There wasn't even enough time to yell "Hey, your boat is sinking!" that's how fast it happened. There was no-one on board at the time. Will try to get more pics today as the owner tries raising it.

dumb question...but can a sailboat come back from that?   ie.  Fix leak, dry out and set sail again?

That explains the sensation known as "that sinking feeling".

Update: There was a barge there today with a bucket loader. They put straps around the boat and used the bucket to lift while heavy-duty pumps emptied the hull. Within a couple hours it was floating again. I'll let you know if it's still floating tomorrow. ;-)

What I gather from the owner is the engine was probably shot to begin with, now it is for sure. There was also a generator which is most likely gone too as well as batteries and any electronics. But the boat can be repaired and re-equipped.

What a shame. I wonder why they expect it float this time. Maybe they fixed it.

I wonder what caused it to sink, other than the obvious that it took on water.  If it were mine, and I just paid to have it raised back up, I would want it on dry land until it could be made seaworthy again.  Besides which, I'd be tearing out the inside to allow it to dry out.  Maybe possible to save some of the interior working if dried out properly?

Well, a day later and it's still floating. The guy doesn't take care of his toys properly. I'm guessing the slat-boards along the sides midship poking out must have something to do with it. The boat must have been taking on water at a slow rate until it was low enough to where water started pouring in through the cracks in the sides like a sieve.

A shame really, could be made into a very nice liveable craft.  Not the first, nor the last time I've seen valuable things get neglected.

Can you imagine the cost of the teak and mahogany to repair her ... Would make marine ply seem cheap !

I can just imagine the cost to have the barge come out and raise the boat alone, must be in the thousands.

No update on the cruiser, it's still sitting here.

Then the cost to "Haul it out" for repairs ...
