Time frame replacing stringers and transom questions
« on: May 02, 2018, 09:16:52 AM »
Well I am trying to pick which project boat to hit hard first.  I have read and watched a lot of others projects here and it seems like it takes long periods of time since most of us have to work full time, have home projects, and also like to be out boating.  Was curious if anyone had the time and did these things all at once start to finish because they had the time to give completely to it and not distracted from life responsibilities.  I have some time off the month of may, trying to get the life things done so I could actually focus on one project.  Thanks for any input as always, Jim.

If you had a 40-60  hrs I would think you could put in floor and stringers. Especially if you had done it before and new what you were doing. Even better if you had the tools and materials or a helper. Even if the helper it is just to hand you stuff.
I think this has become an addiction.

I know time is valuable to all of us, and trying to figure a way to give that kind of time and get it over kind of thing.  I have watched a lot of videos and read  lots of forums here and trying to use the info from everyone to take the best path.  I still have not seem much from people here using the sea cast method of stringers, and transoms.  It seems it would be less involved and the product says stronger and not vulnerable to water damage.  In any case i want to do a good job and as professional looking as possible.  The couple boats I need to do this with I only ever want to do once and make it last my lifetime.

What model craft are we talking about would be my first question.  There are many variables involved, one significant oquestion would be if you need to split the boat.  Given a typical cvx 16-20 foot craft, new transom, stringers, and floor could be accomplished in 40-60 hours.   Careful planning and insuring the materials are on hand will save considerable time.  Having help is a definite plus, especially when laying up glass.

may have to do one of my c512 metrics and the 86 cvx 18 I just got a few months ago.  I can tell by the gelcoat stress cracks on the chimes it needs new stringers.  The transom looks dry and solid but still need to poke around a bit more.  Would like to do them without splitting but I think to do the transom right needs to be.

Splitting the hull certainly makes the transom an easier process, but replacing it does not always mandate they be separated.   Tim(Still Fishin) did a transom on a Timi without splitting, Doran, I believe, did a half seacast transom on his CVZ.   Doug is in the middle of a metric right now and has covered the rebuild quite well on here.  You really wont know for certain until you get into it.  We all seem to find more as we dig, but once all torn out and cleaned, you can plan for the rebuild.   When the plan is laid, and parts/materials on order is when you go fishing or honeydew list.

I did transom our 1900 and balharbor, and helped Ross with his CV23 without splitting. I think in general most IO’s could be done that way. I would tend too agree with the time estimates others have posted

Both of the boats you mentions only have 3 stringers if I remember. I would say you could accomplish that in a the 40-60hr time frame pretty easily.
I think this has become an addiction.

I didn't do my stringer or floor, but ... removed old transom and bilge well "V" over the winter, removed everything needed to flip deck and did it in one LONG day ...
Would guess even with 3 or 4 guys helping you it would be two days for stringer/floor/transom.
Maybe more because the CVX/C500 are more involved then a CV's transom.

Just a floor, short synopsis.  Looks like the picture links are broke but the YouTube video still works.

Best of luck.
