Got a feeling this is going to be a interesting rebuild ..

Gotta start somewhere, strip it inside, then outside for grinding and tear out?
-
I will probably implement the dust collector bear.

Unless your not using the Back to back seats.

We are planning to use the original design on the interior. The fact that the boat was all intact is the main reason We drove all the way to South Dakota to get it when we already had one that was the same.

The MerCruiser manual states a minimum of 13 inches from the waterline to the top of the riser, so will have to see what it looks like when I get my risers on Monday.

The snails look like they are going to work very well, they fit under the original V-8 Engine cover, and the tops of them are about 15 inches above the waterline, plenty of clearance for manual steering although I’m not sure the power steering ram and valve would fit.
Glenwood manifolds and aluminum snails weigh 22 pounds each, The MerCruiser log manifolds with risers weighs 60 pounds each, for a net weight loss of 76 pounds.

Could you use external steering ram's ?
I've seen them on the Teleflex/Seastar web site. Guessing very expensive though.
Doug found a place that rebuild & sell hyd. steering systems.
-
i have been looking at options, I think i could adapt the outboard cyl i have now to fit inside, or get the one made for a stern drive (one on ebay for a fair price). as far as the external go, looks like its mostly custom and for high power/speed use. i may fab something but i think it would be overkill for this application. the teleflex external are large displacement and require a vary large vol helm.
-
Do you .. or will you have to split deck from hull to do transom ?
Asking for a friend ...

Not sure yet, it’s riveted and glassed all the way around.

after several hours of grinding yesterday and today its mostly done, just half the transom mud plate to go.
speaking that, the motor mounts, stringer and the floor were set with that same super hard grey stuff :(
i got these carbide disks at harbor freight, they last almost 2 hours grinding on that grey stuff.

-
I'm still not certain what that grey stuff is, but I thought it was only present on the mid eighties boats. Mine was cracked pretty bad so a little work with an air chisel got most of it. I'll have to look for those grinding wheels my next trip to horror freight.
-
When I did Kips boat the gray stuff on the transom. I used a rivet gun and chisel to remove. Worked real slick did not take much time to do. Plus it keep the dust down.
-
Had the same stuff on my transom and splash well .. 1976 CV16

decided I should flip it over and check to see if it has the infamous strake cracks.
Both sides have fractures in the gelcoat, I assume it must go all the way through or at least the layup must be week there.

Must be a common Glastron problem from the 70s boats.
My V179 and the CVZ-18 both show racks along the strakes. If I replace the stringers in the V179 this spring I am going to add some reinforcement layers inside the hull.

Hook is not too bad, 1/16 in most places cept outer stb strake is 0.2

Looking good Joe keep up the good work.
Will the floor go in this week?
-
Nice job!
-
in an effort to locate placement of extra martial under the floor to accommodate screwing the seat bases in i have discovered this CV16 appears to have less space that the GT150 had :(
-
That monster V8 has to occupy space somewhere right? Maybe consider just one set of seats, the rest storage? I like the look of the back-to-back seats, and yours look to be in great shape. Maybe jump seats alongside the engine cover as second set? IDK, tough call.
-
Our current thought is to make the seats a little smaller, similar to the size of the ones in the GT150.
I think moving away from the back to back seats it came with would be The wrong Way to go.
The SS has jump seats but the V8 don’t have enough space so it has steps.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
-
Make them Benny and Willy jump seats? Look like steps to us? Deck carpet, and storage underneath? Maybe make the B2B seats into a jump seat rear facing? With your talent I'm certain it will be a neat solution.
-
Only the CV19SS had jump seats .. guessing that's what you meant by "SS" ..
The engine cover and stern on the V8 are different then the CV16SS, but never noted how different ..
-
Guess ya could do CVX seats .. and change back to CV style seats if wanted or needed ..
-
Some CV16 outboards came with GT160 seats.
Gives you an idea of what room you would gain and look of two buckets.
-
I did mean CV 16 SS...
But I guess I was wrong about that I thought I remembered Jason‘s boat having jump seats in it. I obviously have a bona fide case of CRS.

Ha!
I just brought an old style transom assembly with power steering home from the farm it won’t work the way it’s set up because the right bank is set to the back so the starboard side riser only has about 2 inches of clearance off the transom

And mocked up the required exhaust elbows to connect risers to tips

I will admit it’s an awful lot of work to cut 77 pounds out of the boat, might’ve been just easier to use the cast iron manifolds and lose that much weight

Might need to cut back on the beer and start grazing on greens.

Wet joint snails maybe machine and turn at the wet joint? Or maybe weld up a stainless snail to fit better? Silly idea, but could you swap them and put the snails forward? I suppose no power steering is worth a try, find the happy spot with the trim tab. Worse case go external on the drive, but which is more cost effective, different exhaust or external power steering. You're making great progress, I kinda like the cardboard exhaust mock ups, I generally just cut and tack tubing, then remove for final welding.
-
I have considered all of those options, but none of them really seem that they would work out very well.
I don’t have the tubing yet but really needed to know that I was going to be able to make something work.
As far as the steering goes the sea star is effectively no feedback

Well now the boat is hanging upside down. I was able to demo the support for the dash and the Gunwhales, and I got the composite material glued in today. I was also able to reattach the pieces I cut off on the side of the engine compartment to make it wider to accommodate the 351.

I also bought some stainless steel bilge vents and got them cut in as well

NICE !
With all the cut outs in dash for steering helm and gauges, dash is weak and flexible on mine.

Yeah ours was actually broken.
I am considering backing it up with a piece of aluminum

I got a little creative with the back boxes for the bilge vents

Made some minor progress, marked up a possible 30 gallon fuel tank I would have to custom make it from aluminum.

Somewhat concerned about the weight, the 17 gallon Moeller plastic replacement would weigh 110 pounds full, The custom-made aluminum tank would weigh 220 to 230 pounds depending on if I use .100 or .125 material.
And a sad day in the middle of the project, I need the garage to work on cars

after several vehicle repairs, and waiting out the sub zero weather we are back at it. making minor progress cleaning up various details.
filled outer corners of transom with airjay6011 (Ceramic Pourable Compound), i had 1 gal and their was still about an inch of space so i finished it with foam.
installed panels for gunwale storage (1/2" plascore)
remeasured and found a moeller 25gal tank that fits similar to the orig, the filler needs to be moved to starboard side (near where the horn was mounted) the only thing i'm changing is a custom PU tube that is more to the rear canter of the tank.
cu the holes for the through hull ex so i can get final measurements before i start cutting metal for the custom elbows required.

Won't your through hull exhaust be below the water line even while on plane with as low as they are?
-
Possibly, but that’s about as high as I can get them with the current set up I have, Center rise aluminum manifolds are almost impossible to find for a Ford. OMC center rise manifolds are pretty common but the risers are really tall.
And I think that 77 pounds is worth saving.

C'mon Brandon, the exhaust ports are super low so he can drive it home if the prop comes off solely by the exhaust! Ha!
