What would you get? (Dream Boat)
« on: November 25, 2011, 11:18:55 AM »
So here is the back story...   Many of you know that some Glastron-a-holics have a tendancy to want the next best thing in terms of their boats.  We've seen it time and time again as those of us that start out with the small runabout end up with the bigger, faster, cleaner, etc. boat.  It happened to me 2 times.  I went from my first v-173 to the CV-16SS.  Of course the CV wasn't enough, so I found myself grinning from ear to ear as I pulled home my CVX-20.  I used to suffer from a great deal of boat envy when I owned the previous two boats, and for the first time I was experiencing relief in the ownership of  the Silver Fox.  For the first time in 4 years, I felt like I truely had the boat that I wanted.  I could go out with any other members of the club, and I was simply happy.  So...  Now that boat has gone off to greener pastures somewhere in the Dakota's.

And, as expected...  the itch is back.  Yes, I know I have a neat boat in the new V-195.  I'm extremely glad that it has a powerplant that still rumbles like a monster, and I expect that it's going to be running around 55mph when the restoration is done.  All of that is well and good, but Lisa and I had a conversation yesterday after I spent the morning glancing at Red's new Scimitar.  She asked me if the ol feelings of boat envy were back, and of course, they had begun to camp out in the back of my head again.  She asked me if the new V-195 is ever going to be enough to fill the need that I have for the Glastron / Carlson experience.  Regretably, I believe that it will not...

So, Lisa in her wisdom and graciousness said that sometime down the road  (2-4 years) we should be able to put a 2nd boat into the budget.  She knows that the V-195 is going to be her preference in boating, but she recognizes that I'm going to need something that can push into the mid 60's+ in order to be happy.

Here is what I want to propose...  I'm looking to start making a decision about what boat I want to seek out.  I have a great deal of respect for those of you in the club that have chased a certain boat for several years until you find the right one.  I would like to do the same thing.  In the past, I've always thought that the CVX-18 with the 5.7L motor is the best platform to build off of, but I'm not sure...

What boat would you buy if you were in the market?  Post your favorite pictures of that boat if you have them!

Dream boat?  How about dream boat"s"?  I already have my dream boat.  The Ship had been a dream for a long time.  1979 CV-27

It needs fresh engines in it .. Dream engines?  Would love to have a pair of OleRed's built 327 or 350's let a lone a pair of strokers with matching drives.

Love all my boats.  CV-21 would be fun with more HP too.

Miss Mayberry with fresh interior would complete my little girl, she is a lot of fun to drive as she is.

Then my Problem Child ... dreaming of several options for building it into a adrenalin boosting ride. First thought was to convert Cannon Ball Eyes to a mercruiser driven 350 or 305 package.  Latest idea is to make it a Jet driven 302 or 305 pacage.  Either way, going to be a V8 CV-16ss again some day.

It just takes $$$$ and time.

Quite simply, I like speed and an Allison XS2003 with a Promax 225 HP hitting in the 80's and 90's would fill the bill. In my opinion, no Glastron is built for these kinds of speed, plus the Allisons have style, workmanship, strength, decent MPG, and rough water ability. I am talking to the wrong crowd here, but that's my opinion.

In the meantime, I'm learning to be content with my Glastron V-153 with a motor upgrade next spring.

Hmm...the problem for me is I never find the 'perfect' boat.

I plan on keeping Goldie for as long as I'm around...I'm also planning on adding a removable center windshield section eventually so I have the best of both worlds...CVX-18'ish with the bow cover & center windshield in place.  Or...the CVZ-18 when its family time, which is most of the time.

Now...what do I dream about having?  Scimitar, CV-23HT (maybe), CV-21 or CV-19.  I think a jet would be fun to play with, so my order would have to be CV-21 or a Scimitar....just because they're such a unique boat.

If we're not talking classic Glastrons...then I'd love a Mastercraft, or any top quality wakeboard boat.

My dream boat would be my Scimitar... Finished. Many hours of labor between then and now! I wouldn't want it to be my only boat, but definitely looking forward to it. I think the CSS-19 will be fun next year, but the dream is the Scimitar.

CV-21 or CV-19
Ya the 19 is high on my list too. Rare & has a lot of unique features molded into the hull. Scimitar goes without mention ...

My dream boat would be neither Glastron, vintage, or anything sporty, but more along the lines of luxury and practical to cruise the Bahamas and Caribbean. Perhaps something from the Meridian or Azimut line of yachts.  ;D

Well if we're talkin fantasy I'd go with an Ocean Alexander yacht. AND a Scimitar, CV21, 19, 16V8 jet, Intimidator, etc. And a carbon fiber 153 ...

A Scimitar would be the ultimate Glastron Carlson.  But I've always wanted a CV-23, with a jet of course.

But then I'd need a bigger tow vehicle.  And then a bigger barn to put them in.  Then bigger land to put a bigger barn on.  So the key word right now is, "Dream".

Hmmm.  A Meteor would be cool, too.

I agree with the CVX-18 and that would probably be the easiest to find and get the speed you want, my favorite "hot rod" is by far the cv-21, I'd really love to get a hold of one of those some day.

Agreed. Believe Walt's "Shadow Girl" has been clocked at 73 or 74 with a small block.

Yeah, if one wants a platform to build off of, the CVX-18 is probably the standard.

I agree that the CV-21 was the first boat that really caught my attention in the Carlson line.  I remember talking with Chris about it many years ago, and trying to figure out how on earth I could get ahold of his...

Now, with the experience that I have I know that the jet drive is not the way that I want to go.  I can say that the CVX-20 Deluxe with the Jet is one of the nicest rides that you can get, but I'm not really looking to re-create the CVX-20 experience.  To my knowledge, the CV-21 only came in the Jet Drive setup.  From what i can find, the first production year was 1971, and they were only produced until 1975.

I'm thinking that it would be a pretty cool project to do a re-power of a CV-21 to a vortec 5.7 with mercruiser drive.  To my knowledge, there hasn't been a build like that done yet.  There is a monster twin jet built on this platform, but i haven't seen a stern drive.

So, I'll call dibbs on that idea, and maybe someday I can make it happen!  :)

Thoughts?
