Trailer advice
« on: March 13, 2012, 02:07:41 PM »
Yesterday, Doran gave me a link to a trailer in my area ... it was sold.

Guy has another he's willing to sell.  Asking $300.  I've attached pictures.

We moved to Iowa from Texas and I'm not accustomed to seeing much rust.  Anytime we took our boat out to the coast, we washed down really good as soon as we pulled out & washed down again once we got back to San Antonio.  I wash the car every fill-up, so I don't keep any road salt or anything on the car very long.

I've offered the guy $250 because of the rust clean-up that needs to take place.  Suggestions?  Opinions?  If he'll take my offer and I buy, I'll hit the rust with some phosphoric acid, brush it out real well and re-paint the whole thing.  Would anyone else be concerned with the amount of rust on this thing?

Just for fun, I'll throw in a picture of the wheels that just arrived today for my current trailer.  If I get a new trailer, I'll turn the current into a flat-bed tilt utility trailer.  Enough to drag home my plywood and other home-improvement stuff.

That trailer makes mine look really bad!  I see a little rust from rock chips...but otherwise looks good to me.  Looks like a potential nice fit.

My utlimate plan is to sand the rust spots down and then do a couple coats of Rustoleum Hammered Finish paint on it...could you do something simliar?  (I know some guys really like their trailer to match the boat & really shine...I'm not one of them though...so I just want something that's solid and that looks decent.)

Doran, he said it had a 115 on it and it was way too much for that little boat.
That was on the phone before he sent the pictures ... I noticed it was a Glastron, too & wondered if I could buy it with the boat cheap enough to sell of the hull and make some of the trailer cost, but I'd rather just take a trailer home and get started.

Tire shop had only one tire for my new wheels ... mounted & balanced.  I'll pick up the other this week.  I didn't think it would be this much of a difference.  Makes me laugh and thank God I made home from Chicago in one piece with those tiny skateboard wheels that are on the trailer now.

The new tire should come to where I smudged my thumb in the dirt on the fender - should be enough travel without having to remove the fender and relocate.  This fender is welded on, not bolted.  So I'd have to grind them out if I needed to move it.

That's crazy!  You'll be a whole lot safer with real wheels on there now...

looking at those little wheels makes me think of the landing gear on an airplane.
