My '67 TILT pump had only one solenoid to power it going "up", hard wired to the switch for "down". Mercury felt there was no need for a down solenoid because it was gravity down and there was no real load on the pump, it just needed to spin the other way to let the hydraulic fluid flow through it. This is not the case with a newer Tilt & Trim pump. The pump operates under a load in both directions. I also assume the valves inside the pump are going to be different to be able to completely shut off flow in both directions to lock the drive in the position selected. I would definitely use the newer pump with the newer trim rams.

Thanks Rich that's kinda what I was thinking too. I have some many parts to use off the donor boat and the complete motor and drive I got from Retro. Do you know what gasket number I would need for the mr transome assembly I know there is 2 different ones and also if the bellow are the same off my ez shift to the mr I hate buy new ons those hardly have any time on them.

Thanks

For the transom seal check this page, I'm pretty sure it's item part # 65533A1, 4th from the bottom of the page.

http://www.mercurypartsexpress.com/us/transom-gaskets-seals-c2623.html

The pre-1974 transom assemblies used a flat gasket listed just two items below the MR transom seal. I'm not sure about the bellows but I suppose you can remove them from your assemblies and give them a visual compare.

The transom gasket is like a large O-ring which needs to be glued into a groove on the transom assembly. I used some Weldwood Contact Cement for that task to stick it into place. I prefer to have the joint where the two gasket ends are joined to be at the top of the assembly. It can be tricky to get the whole casket seated within the groove so just go easy and try to keep even tension on it the whole way around so it doesn't pull out. Then, when I install it to the boat I used a little 3M spray adhesive on the transom around the drive hole to give the gasket something to stick to and then tighten the whole assembly to the boat so it's even all the way around.

Here's the page on bellows:

http://www.mercurypartsexpress.com/us/index.php?target=products&mode=search&q=bellows&search_by=sku&cat=2625

Descriptions can be found for each when you click the part number. So, if I'm reading it right the bellows are different. The MR and Alpha drives use the first one listed, the pre-1972 drives use the last one listed. But it also looks as though they are interchangeable as it says they both can be used for the MC-1 drive. The newer probably replaces the older. ??

Speaking of power trim,

The power trim on the V172 slowly falls. Just sitting it drops maybe an inch  in 24 hours. Then when under power in the water, you can feel it slowly drop. Think this would be a seal in the trim pump or cylinder? Been this way since I put the motor on in December and I have not seen any external leaks.

Nice to see you working on the old boat Tom!

Jason, I had the same problem. I bought an "O" ring kit for the cylinders. The "O" rings can wear or get brittle and allow the oil to pass around them.
