1979 Glastron HPV-175 Complete Restoration
« on: December 12, 2017, 10:29:32 AM »
I stumbled on this beauty on Craigslist back in October.  What a great way to get reacquainted with the club and become more active!

She offers the best of all worlds; fishing, cruising, open-bow lounging and beach accessibility.  Something that will compliment our 26' 'non-Glastron' Searay!

I got the top off and the hull gutted in under 10 hours.  Every piece of wood was either water-logged or disintegrated.  This is my fourth tear-down, so I feel comfortable saying that if the transom is soft, so is everything else! - exceptions apply.

I'll mostly post pics and maybe a caption or two here to document my progress, so if anyone has any questions or comments on my progress or sanity, please post.

Disclaimer: I don't plan this build to bring her back to life as a 'purist' Glastron, but I hope she will retain some of the old glory that the name represents.

I went with wood for the transom for the structural characteristics.  Every other piece of wood originally in the boat will be taken out and Plascore used instead.  I'll bond aluminum where I need screw holding power.

I believe the wood and the plastic core have about the same for structural strength don't they?  Maybe even the plastic core being stronger. I would think if you could laminate the transom pieces while bonding them together. Then you could fill the honeycomb areas full where you will be bolting threw and would never have to worry about rot in the place where it is most likely to occur.

Haven't researched it, but where or how did you come to the conclusion that the ply would be stronger?

I think this has become an addiction.

I was wondering same thing ...
Didn't Doug use a solid core material in his V-153 rebuild ?

I'm no structural engineer by any means.  I get all my info either from Mark at Express Composites or from several seasoned boat builders, who combined have 37 years in the business (trustworthy).  And, YouTube (taken with a grain of salt: trust but verify!)

That said, I understand that the 'core', weather it be wood or hollow plastic, is just a means to hold the resin and glass in place until it's cured.  Whatever the core is, if it is removed the soundness and stability are still present in the laid-up glass, as witnessed when a boat is still functional even if the stringers and transom are disintegrated by rot.  Using Plascore on a transom was an option in my project, however it would have taken a much more elaborate design to accomplish the end result.  Plascore filled with resin does not have as decent a crushproof characteristic as wood does where the motor bolts pass through and clamp the motor to the transom.  Resin shatters under stress.   I would have had to ream out the area and fill the area with a solid product like composite, wood or aluminum to allow the motor bolts to be tightened correctly.  I don't have the motor yet, so I don't have the exact placement of the bolt pattern.

Solid core is an option, and there might be many composite options. However, it is very expensive compared to wood; my transom would have run well over $300 for the materials.

OK ... so wood has better resistance to crushing from motor mounts ... makes sense.
Do you have a motor in mind .. Or best deal at time ?

I put a brand new Mercruiser 350 MPI crate engine in our Searay.  I absolutely love it.  I use Vessel View Mobile to view and monitor the computer systems and sensors on my iPad using bluetooth.  I want the same setup on the HPV.

The boat capacity is a 175.  That seems like overkill for my needs.  I'm considering a 115 or 150 Mercury.  My goal is brand new, but I'd settle for a lightly used 2010 or newer.  I'm going to see what deals I can get at the upcoming boat show.

I am looking at putting a 350 MPI in my CVZ-18. If you don't mind me asking where did you get it?

I have a shop at Miss Croix Yacht Harbor in Prescott.  They are a Mercury dealer.  I got it directly from Mercury through the marina.

A few notes:

The 350 MPI cannot cool sufficiently in front of an Alpha drive.
We had to install the 'Bravo' water pump kit on it with a thru hull raw water inlet.
We had to leave the lower unit reservoir intact and full of oil with the outlet tube sealed off to 'fool' the warning buzzer.
There was a promotion for an extended warranty for 3 years, but a dealer had to install it.

I have no regrets and absolutely love it!

Test fitted the cap.  Almost a perfect fit.  Just a few minor adjustments.  The hull is almost ready to apply gelcoat to the bilge and other internal areas.  Then it's on to repairing all the cracks on the cap...
